IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.

How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

Global fashion trends is considered to be a influential point in people's lives in terms of the way they dress. And overall, I think it's a negative development.

Every country in the world has its own culture and different cultures have different fashions. There can be multiple cultures in the same country.

Nowadays, social media is deeply connected with the lives of the general people. Due to this deep connection, social media is used to set up fashion trends.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response gives a clear opinion—“I think it’s a negative development”—and begins to explain how social media helps fashion trends spread. However, it addresses the task only minimally: the influence of global fashion is not explained beyond the brief statement that social media is used to “set up fashion trends,” and there is no supporting example or developed reason for judging this development negatively. The opening comments about countries having different cultures do not establish how global trends became influential or what their effects are. The response also does not meet the required minimum length, leaving both parts of the question substantially unanswered. To improve, explain specific mechanisms, such as influencers or international brands, then develop the negative effects and support them with a relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic sequence: the opening states a position, the next paragraph introduces cultural differences, and the final paragraph mentions social media. This gives the reader some sense of the intended direction. However, the ideas are not developed into a coherent argument, and the relationship between cultural diversity and the claim about social media is not made clear. The opening fragment beginning “And overall” also feels disconnected from the preceding sentence. With only a few short statements, there is little progression from explaining the cause of global fashion’s influence to evaluating its effects. Use a clear paragraph structure—one section on how trends spread and another on why their effects are negative—and connect each point with explicit explanation and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses relevant topic vocabulary, including “global fashion trends,” “culture,” “social media,” and “fashion trends,” so the general subject is clear. However, the range is narrow and several expressions are awkward or imprecise. “A influential point” is not a natural way to describe fashion’s role; “a significant influence” would be more suitable. Similarly, “the general people” is an unnatural phrase, and “set up fashion trends” does not clearly convey how social media spreads or shapes them. Repetition of “fashion” and “different cultures” also limits variety. Build a more precise topic vocabulary and use natural collocations, such as “shape clothing choices,” “promote styles,” and “influence consumer behaviour.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The short response contains some understandable sentence forms, including the complex opening sentence and the cause-and-effect construction “Due to this deep connection, social media is used…”. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “Global fashion trends is considered,” the plural subject requires “are considered”; “a influential” should be “an influential,” though this article choice is a grammatical issue. The opening “And overall” is also an awkward sentence opening in this context, and the response relies mostly on short, simple statements rather than demonstrating a wider range of structures. Practise subject–verb agreement and article use, then combine related ideas using accurate subordinate clauses. For example, explain that social media platforms promote styles, which can quickly influence what people wear.
