Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.

How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Global fashion has become significantly influential among people from all over the world in recent decades. Social media platforms allow global citizens to get exposed to these fashion trends. This essay will discuss how global fashion influences people and how it negatively affects the environment.

It is undeniable that social media platforms, namely TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram have profoundly influenced people’s sense of style. The Internet allows individuals to access countless fashion-related content. Content creators and influencers on social media platforms often upload videos of themselves wearing and trying on their new clothes. Furthermore, celebrities tend to post their photos of themselves wearing the latest collection from a particular brand. Many people admire influencers and celebrities and therefore imitate their clothing styles to appear fashionable or fit in with society. As a result, the global connectivity via social media has a significant impact on how people perceive fashion in these recent decades.

There are several concerns about how global fashion could negatively affect the environment. Individuals suggest that mass media could lead to fast fashion, the rapid change in styles. For instance, customers buy low-quality clothing that they see on Instagram. They wear those clothes a few times and throw them away within a month. The decomposition of textile waste contributes to the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which increases carbon emissions. This, in turn, could rapidly deteriorate the environment and leads to global warming. Moreover, empirical evidence suggests that the degradation process of materials like plastic that are used in making various wearable products requires a long period of time. This raises public concern about how global fashion could negatively affect the environment.

To conclude, social media platforms have greatly influenced how individuals perceive fashion today. This essay contends that it has several drawbacks in terms of the environmental sustainability.
