Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, global fashion trends have a profound effect on people’s daily life. People are mostly influenced by dressing style of film stars, celebrities, and politicians. I believe it is a negative development because it increases financial burden and affects mental health of people.

People are influenced by popular personalities and try to follow their attire and physical appearance. This increases unnecessarily financial burden on people, as global fashion trends demand heavy amount to be used. People do not realize that, film stars and celebrities’s outfits are mostly sponsored and they wear those costly dresses for marketing purpose. Moreover, to invest on these trending fashions is not worthy at all. For example, I purchased a dress inspired from a famous celebrity for a hundred thousand Pakistani rupees, then I realized, it has nothing special to worth that heavy amount. It could be used for any useful purpose.

Social media plays an important role in promoting these global fashion trends, and people who are unable to follow the trends due to financial constraints, felt low confidence which affect their self-esteem, and lead to mental disturbance and anxiety issues. Moreover, it also causes problems in daily life, as people judge you based on what you wear. Consequently, people especially our young generation is focusing more on fashion trends rather than their education and developing professional skills to impress others.

In conclusion, the growing demand of global fashion trends is impacting our life in negative way and making people mentally depressed and increasing financial burden.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining the influence of global fashion and providing a clear opinion on whether it is positive or negative. The position is consistent throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention financial burden and mental health, the arguments could be extended with more depth or nuance. For instance, you could explore why global fashion has such a strong influence (e.g., the role of digital connectivity or the psychological need for social belonging) more thoroughly. The conclusion is a bit brief and merely restates the introduction rather than synthesizing the main points effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For example', and 'Consequently' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but some transitions feel abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, which helps the reader follow your argument, but the overall structure would benefit from more sophisticated linking phrases to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'profound effect', 'financial constraints', and 'self-esteem'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'demand heavy amount to be used' (should be 'require significant expenditure') and 'not worthy at all' (should be 'not worth it'). Additionally, there are minor errors in phrasing like 'mentally depressed' (redundant) and 'nothing special to worth that heavy amount'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' before 'dressing style'), pluralization ('celebrities’s' should be 'celebrities''), and verb tense/agreement ('people... felt low confidence' should be 'feel low confidence'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some comma splices and awkward phrasing that slightly hinder the flow. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve your accuracy.
