IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.

How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Global fashion has become influential mainly because of social media and international retail chains. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow trends originating in one country to reach audiences worldwide within days. Simultaneously, multinational clothing brands such as Zara and H&M operate in numerous countries, offering similar styles regardless of location. As a result, people increasingly dress according to global trends rather than solely local traditions.

I believe this shift is largely beneficial. Firstly, it fosters cultural exchange, allowing people to appreciate and adopt styles from different parts of the world, which promotes tolerance and global awareness. For example, traditional garments like the kimono or the sari have gained international appreciation partly through global fashion exposure. Secondly, increased competition among international brands has made fashionable clothing more affordable and accessible to a wider population.

However, there are some negative consequences worth noting. The dominance of global trends can overshadow local craftsmanship and traditional clothing industries, threatening cultural diversity. Additionally, fast fashion driven by global trends contributes significantly to environmental pollution due to overproduction and waste.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the influence of global fashion and whether this is positive or negative. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which severely limits the depth of the arguments. While the ideas presented are relevant, they are not sufficiently developed or supported with detailed examples. The conclusion is also missing, which is a key component of a balanced essay. To reach a higher band, you must expand on your points with more specific evidence and ensure you provide a clear, well-structured conclusion that summarises your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised, with clear paragraph breaks separating the introduction, the positive aspects, and the negative consequences. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Additionally', which help guide the reader through your arguments. However, because the text is quite short, the overall progression feels somewhat abrupt. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly throughout the entire piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'multinational', 'cultural diversity', and 'overproduction' correctly. The language is generally natural and appropriate for an academic context. However, the range is somewhat limited due to the brevity of the response. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items related to the topic of fashion and globalisation. Your spelling is accurate throughout the text, which is a positive aspect of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the sentence 'Platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow trends originating in one country to reach audiences worldwide within days' is well-constructed. There are very few grammatical errors, and your punctuation is correct. To move into the higher bands, you should aim to include a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, to demonstrate greater flexibility and control over your writing.
