Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, people are fond of following trends. There are many such aspects in which people dress themselves, influenced by global fashion trends.

Generally, people try to live their lives the way others want them to. It clearly showcases that people are easily influenced by the trends followed by others. This can sometimes be more toxic or harmful in ways that they might not be aware of. This can create a negative impact on one's life. When talking about fashion trends, people, especially females, try to dress up to look more attractive by sometimes carrying out some bold or uncomfortable styles. For example, a young girl gets influenced by the same and tries to copy that, which in turn makes her feel uncomfortable, and later on she even feels guilty about the same. Many weird and awkward fashion tips and styles are adopted under the influence of social media. This can be disastrous for someone to some extent.

The analysis says that choosing anything to wear at any event, intentionally or unintentionally, involves the risk of being judged. The majority says that people are criticised for their style. In the initial phase of social media, people were ignoring and criticising the aspects of being dressed weirdly, which later on was normalised. In the same thing in context, people thought of getting an attraction point by carrying out such fashion trends and even tried to invent new such trends on their own.

At the end, it can be concluded that the global fashion trends can barely have any plus points. Either way, it mostly contains disadvantages. All this clearly shows that this is a negative development. Along with this, it also specifies the reasons for it having a strong influence on the lives of people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the influence of fashion (social media, social pressure) and taking a clear position that it is a negative development. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation of why fashion is influential is quite general, and the arguments regarding the 'negative' aspects rely heavily on vague assertions about 'weird' styles rather than exploring the broader socio-economic or psychological implications. To improve, you should provide more specific, concrete examples or deeper analysis of the mechanisms behind these trends, such as the role of influencers or the psychological need for social belonging, rather than focusing solely on the discomfort of clothing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'In the same thing in context' and 'Along with this' feel slightly forced or unnatural. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the transition between the impact on females and the broader influence of social media is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'disastrous', 'normalised', and 'intentionally'. However, the vocabulary is often repetitive and lacks the precision required for higher bands. For instance, phrases like 'weird and awkward fashion tips' and 'getting an attraction point' are somewhat informal and imprecise. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more sophisticated collocations and academic vocabulary. Avoid relying on simple descriptors like 'weird' or 'bad' and instead use more nuanced language to describe the societal impact of fashion trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'The analysis says that choosing anything to wear... involves the risk' is slightly awkward, and 'The majority says that people are criticised' is imprecise. There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining the use of complex sentence structures will help improve your accuracy and range.
