Student answer (Band 7.5)

Nowadays, the way people dress is greatly affected by global fashion trends. With the help of social media, celebrities and international brands, people are following similar styles across the world. In my opinion, this is mostly a positive development, although it also has some disadvantages.

There are several reasons why global fashion has become so popular. Firstly, social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok allow people to see the latest fashion trends within seconds. Many influencers and famous actors wear new styles, and their followers try to copy them. Secondly, international clothing brands have opened stores in many countries, making fashionable clothes easier to buy than before. As a result, people from different cultures often wear similar outfits.

I believe this trend has more positive effects than negative ones. One important advantage is that people have more choices and can express their personality through different styles. They can also learn about fashion from other countries, which helps in sharing cultures. For example, many young people in India wear Korean or Western clothes because they like the designs and feel more confident in them.

However, there are some negative sides as well. Some people spend too much money on branded clothes only to look fashionable. In addition, traditional dresses are becoming less common, especially among young generation. This may lead to the loss of cultural identity in the future.

In conclusion, global fashion has become a strong influence mainly because of the internet, celebrities and international brands. Although it can reduce the popularity of traditional clothing and encourage unnecessary spending, I think its benefits are greater because it gives people more freedom to choose their own style and connect with other cultures.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify the drivers of global fashion (social media, influencers, international brands) and provide a balanced view on whether this is a positive or negative development. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of young people in India adopting Western or Korean styles. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the analysis of the 'negative' side, perhaps by discussing the environmental impact of 'fast fashion' or the psychological pressure to conform, which would add more depth to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the reasons for the influence of fashion or the pros and cons of the trend. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'As a result', and 'However', to guide the reader through your arguments. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between the positive and negative aspects is even more seamless, perhaps by using more sophisticated linking phrases to contrast the two sides of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'cultural identity', 'unnecessary spending', and 'global fashion trends' are used correctly. You attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, which is good. However, the range is somewhat limited; to achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more idiomatic expressions or less common collocations. For instance, instead of 'easier to buy', you could use 'more accessible' or 'readily available'. The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for the context, with no significant errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'Although it can reduce the popularity of traditional clothing and encourage unnecessary spending, I think its benefits are greater...'. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is solid. There are no major grammatical errors that cause confusion. To move toward a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, to demonstrate greater flexibility in your writing.
