Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this text, I will discuss how many ways of the way people dress today has been influenced by worldwide fashion trends.

I will discuss how global fashion has a strong influence on people's lives and I will discuss the positives and negatives of this as a development.

One of the many reasons I believe global fashion has became such a strong influence on people's lives is the internet. Nowadays, many people have access to the internet where they can see relevant fashion trends from across the world. Another reason for why global fashion has become a big influence on the lives of people is through TV. Similarly to the internet, many people have access to the TV nowadays. Thus, they can see different fashion trends from across the globe.

I think this can be seen potentially as both a positive and negative development. In a positive way, I believe this can help people feel better about themselves, knowing they are trendy.

At the same time, I believe it can be viewed negatively as people may pressurised to follow these global fashion trends.

Personally, I believe this is a positive development. It shows that people want to look a certain way that makes them feel trendy. Also, I think it shows an open-mind to global fashion trends and I believe it shows that people are willing to try new things, which I view in a positive way.

Overall, I can see how the influence of global fashion trends could be seen as both a positive or negative development. However, I believe the positives outweigh the negatives and thus it should be seen as a positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying the influence of the internet and TV and providing a clear position on the development. However, the development of ideas is quite limited. The arguments regarding why fashion is influential are repetitive, focusing almost exclusively on 'access' to media. Similarly, the discussion on whether it is positive or negative lacks depth; the points about 'feeling trendy' and 'open-mindedness' are stated but not sufficiently supported with specific examples or logical elaboration. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the implications of these trends, such as the impact on cultural identity or consumerism, rather than simply stating that they exist.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. There is a progression of ideas, though it is somewhat mechanical. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In a positive way', 'At the same time', and 'Overall' to signal shifts in the argument. However, the transition between the influence of the internet and TV is repetitive, and the paragraphing could be more sophisticated. The flow is generally easy to follow, but the reliance on simple sentence structures and repetitive linking phrases limits the overall coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on common, repetitive phrasing such as 'big influence', 'positive development', and 'trendy'. While the meaning is always clear, there is little attempt to use less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions that would demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language. For example, instead of repeating 'influence', you could use terms like 'pervasive impact', 'cultural phenomenon', or 'global homogenization'. Expanding your vocabulary to include more academic collocations would significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally accurate, there are noticeable errors that detract from the quality. For instance, 'global fashion has became' should be 'has become', and 'people may pressurised' should be 'people may be pressured'. Additionally, the sentence structure is somewhat repetitive, often starting with 'I believe' or 'I think'. To improve, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms, such as conditional clauses or passive constructions, and ensure greater accuracy in verb tenses and passive voice formation.
