Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is undeniable that contemporary attire is dictated by transnational style trends. This thesis is greatly influenced by digital age and mass marketing and I contend that this phenomenon is largely detrimental due to impact on local and traditional clothing heritage.

The omnipresence of global fashion in modern society can be primarily attributed to socio -digital connectivity as social applications are pooled with different trends. The other reason is the growth of multinational companies and the fast paced export import which results in availability of brands almost at every corner of the world.

From critical perspective, this widespread homoganisation of style carries a profound implications on the cultural style of clothing and also led to cultural erosion. The attire an individual wears acts as a vehicle of an individuals agency.

Ultimately, although global trends offer uncharted outlets, care must be taken to to preserve the culture against the tide of mass uniformity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 152 words. Consequently, the ideas are significantly underdeveloped. While you identify the causes of global fashion influence (social media and multinational corporations) and state a clear position that this is detrimental, the lack of length prevents you from providing the necessary supporting examples or detailed analysis required for a higher band. To improve, you must expand each body paragraph with specific examples, such as the decline of traditional garments in a particular country or the specific impact of fast-fashion marketing strategies, to ensure a fully developed response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'The other reason is' and 'From a critical perspective,' which help guide the reader. However, the brevity of the response limits the use of more sophisticated linking words. To improve, ensure that you use a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect sentences and ideas more fluidly, and ensure that each paragraph contains a clear topic sentence followed by supporting evidence to improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'transnational,' 'omnipresence,' 'homogenisation,' and 'agency' appropriately. These choices show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. However, there are some minor errors, such as 'pooled with' (which is not the best collocation for social media trends) and 'carries a profound implications' (a grammatical error in number agreement). To reach a higher band, focus on using less common lexical items with greater precision and ensure that collocations are natural and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'digital age' (missing an article), 'carries a profound implications' (incorrect article usage), and 'to to' (repetition error). The sentence structure is generally clear, but the frequency of these minor errors prevents a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for small errors like missing articles and subject-verb agreement, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate greater control.
