Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people are fascinated by the way other people dress nowadays, such as global fashion clothes. The main cause is social media platforms. People see celebrities and influencers wearing certain clothes and want to copy them. I believe this is a negative trend because people who are influenced by them might move far away from their cultural traditional clothes.

There are several reasons why global fashion has become such an increasing influence on people's lives. The main major cause is online platforms. People see new trending clothes and then become obsessed with them and try to enhance their styles. For example, influencers often wear trendy clothes for advertising on TikTok and Instagram platforms. As a result, they look attractive because of another style of clothes, and people would prefer to try their styles.

On the other hand, this is a negative trend because global fashion trends might lead people to move far away from their cultural identity. For example, in every culture, people have their specific traditional clothes, which originally come from their ancestors. As a result, following this global fashion trend means removing every cultural identity because cultural identity is often shown through clothes.

In conclusion, people may have control over their lifestyle and should not copy others, such as influencers. Following or wearing their own specific cultural traditional clothes helps people maintain their cultural identity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying social media as the primary driver and arguing that the trend is negative due to the loss of cultural identity. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the arguments. The ideas are somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the influence of influencers and the loss of tradition. To achieve a higher band, you need to expand your points with more detailed examples or counter-arguments to ensure a more thorough development of the topic. The position is clear, but the lack of length prevents a full exploration of the issues.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'The main cause', 'For example', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical, and the transitions between sentences could be smoother. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the limited length makes the overall structure feel slightly underdeveloped. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph flows naturally into the next without relying on repetitive sentence starters.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'cultural identity' and 'ancestors', but there is a reliance on simpler phrasing such as 'look attractive' and 'copy them'. There is also some repetition of words like 'clothes' and 'trends'. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to fashion and sociology. For instance, instead of 'copy them', you could use 'emulate their style' or 'mimic their aesthetic'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'another style of clothes' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'removing every cultural identity'. Punctuation is generally correct, but the range of complex structures is limited. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate a broader variety of grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, while ensuring that your sentences remain error-free. Focus on refining your sentence construction to sound more natural and precise.
