Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people are fascinated by the way other people dress nowadays, particularly by global fashion trends. The main cause is the influence of social media platforms. People see celebrities and influencers wearing certain clothes and want to copy them. I believe this is a negative trend because people who are influenced by them might move away from their traditional clothing.

There are several reasons why global fashion has become such a strong influence on people's lives. The main reason is the popularity of online platforms. People see new trending clothes and become interested in them, so they try to improve their own styles. For example, influencers often wear trendy clothes for advertising on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. As a result, they look attractive because of their different styles of clothing, and people prefer to imitate their styles.

On the other hand, this is a negative trend because global fashion trends might lead people to move away from their cultural identity. For example, in every culture, people have their own traditional clothes, which originally come from their ancestors. As a result, following global fashion trends may weaken people's connection with their cultural identity because traditional clothing is an important part of their culture and heritage.

In conclusion, people should have control over their lifestyle and should not blindly copy others, such as influencers. Following or wearing their own traditional clothes helps people maintain their cultural identity and remain connected to their heritage. It also allows future generations to understand and appreciate their cultural traditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the influence of global fashion and the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout, particularly regarding the negative impact on cultural identity. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention social media and influencers, the explanation remains quite general. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or deeper analysis of how these trends specifically alter individual behavior or societal norms beyond just 'copying'. The conclusion is relevant but could be more robust in summarizing the main arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'The main reason is', 'On the other hand', and 'As a result' to connect ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., using pronouns or synonyms to refer back to previous concepts) is more varied to avoid repetitive sentence structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'cultural identity', 'heritage', and 'influencers'. However, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common words. There is little evidence of less common or idiomatic language. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary or collocations, such as 'homogenization of style' or 'cultural erosion', rather than repeating simple phrases like 'different styles of clothing' or 'attractive'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. You have good control over basic punctuation and sentence construction. To move into the higher bands, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, to demonstrate greater flexibility. Currently, the sentence patterns are quite uniform, which limits the range score.
