Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, many aspects of the way an individual dresses today are influenced by global fashion trends. The global fashion has become a strong influence due to heavy usage of social media in recent years. An individual spends more time on social media and learns about the fashion of the current market. For example, the actor's post influence young adults about the different fashion such as hairstyles and types of clothes. While this trend offers certain advantages, I believe it also brings some drawbacks, making it both a positive and a negative development.

On the one hand, dressing according to the global fashion trend can be considered a positive development because it provides a variety of choices to a person. This is because people become tired of wearing the same kind of clothes everyday. For example, it enables an individual to wear different types of clothes according to the occasion such as wearing designer shorts during parties, embroidery shirts on beaches and so on. As a result, influencing from the global fashion trends helps people to have a different choices to wear at the same time. Moreover, this trend offers cultural exchange. People from various countries provide different trends according to their nations, this enables an individual to know about the culture of different countries. This helps people to try different kinds of clothes worn in other nations.

On the other hand, there are several negative consequences of this trend. Firstly, it creates financial pressure on an individual. Young adults with lower income groups are influenced from the global fashion trends to purchase expensive clothes and items from the reputed brands such as Lacoste, Rolex and so on. Thus, they push themselves to buy this products which in turn creates financial pressure. Secondly, this trend leads to a loss of traditional wears. More modern fashion revolves everyday, which enables an individual to forget the traditional clothing of their culture.

In conclusion, although the people dressed according to global fashion trends create concern about financial pressure and loss of traditional wears, it also provides some benefits such as a wide variety of choices and cultural exchange. Therefore, I would consider this trend to be a mainly positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying the influence of social media and discussing both positive and negative aspects. The position is clear throughout, although the conclusion contradicts the body paragraphs by stating the trend is 'mainly positive' despite the arguments presented. Ideas are generally relevant, but some points, such as the 'loss of traditional wears,' are under-developed and lack specific examples to fully support the claim. To reach a higher band, ensure that the conclusion aligns logically with the points discussed in the body paragraphs and provide more depth in the analysis of the negative impacts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'Firstly,' which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the phrase 'influencing from the global fashion trends' which is grammatically awkward and disrupts the cohesion. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the logical link between the introduction and the final verdict could be strengthened to improve the overall coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'cultural exchange' and 'reputed brands.' However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'influencing from the global fashion trends' instead of 'the influence of global fashion trends,' and 'traditional wears' instead of 'traditional clothing' or 'traditional attire.' These errors do not impede communication but prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding the range of synonyms and focusing on correct collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the actor's post,' 'the global fashion') and prepositional usage ('influenced from' instead of 'influenced by'). Additionally, there are issues with pluralization and word forms, such as 'buy this products' (should be 'these products') and 'more modern fashion revolves everyday' (should be 'evolves'). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. Increasing the accuracy of complex structures and proofreading for basic grammar would improve the score.
