Student answer (Band 6.5)

Global fashion trends play a catalytic role in influencing many aspects of the way individuals dress. With the rise of technology, the world has become a global village where people can connect with other people across the globe and learn new fashion trends. From my kaleidoscope, it is a negative development and in this essay, I shall discuss how global fashion has become such an indispensable part of people's lives.

Today, global fashion plays a vital role in people's lives, from influencing which kinds of dresses look chic to which colours are in trend. With easy access to internet in today's age, apps like Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook have gained a huge audience. Brands collaborate with famous actors and actresses, sportspersons and social media influencers to captivate the public and use their trust in celebrities to promote global fashion. As people come across a plethora of reels and videos on social media about the various types of clothings prevalent worldwide, it piques their interest too. Consequently, people start buying items that have become a hot topic on social media platforms.

The rise of global fashion may seem appealing to the younger generation as they get to experience the new trends that are spreading like fire on the internet, but its cons overweigh its pros. Firstly, the fashion trends are capricuous and keep changing every month. As a result, people partake in unmindful consumerism and buy items that they would only use a couple of times which only adds to the garbage dumps. Another serious outcome is that people get so engrossed in these trends that they forget their own cultural heritage. The youngsters may adopt global fashion to the extent that they have may end up loosing their own identity. For instance, in my own state Punjab, the 'phulkari' and 'punjabi jutti' which were once an everyday staple, have now become a rare sight. So is the plight of Maharashtra's 'kohlrapuris' and Rajasthan's 'ghagra choli'.

To recapitulate, global fashion trends have a lasting impression on people these days and influence their styling choices. Just because they are advertised by the celebrities people look up to, it does not nullify the great threat it poses to peoples's traditional outfits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the influence of global fashion and the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. You clearly state your position that it is a negative development. The ideas regarding social media influence and the loss of cultural heritage are relevant and well-supported with specific examples, such as the mention of 'phulkari' and 'kohlrapuris'. To reach a higher band, ensure that the discussion on the 'influence' part of the prompt is as detailed as the 'positive/negative' part. You have provided a solid foundation, but further elaboration on the psychological or economic mechanisms behind this influence would strengthen the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Firstly', and 'To recapitulate' to guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the causes of influence from the negative impacts. However, some transitions could be more sophisticated. For instance, the link between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better connect the 'influence' to the 'negative consequences'. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'catalytic role', 'indispensable', 'plethora', and 'unmindful consumerism'. These choices show an awareness of style and collocation. There are a few minor errors, such as 'clothings' (clothing is uncountable) and 'capricuous' (spelling: capricious). Additionally, 'From my kaleidoscope' is an unusual idiom that does not fit the context of an academic essay. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your ideas with precision and flexibility, showing a good command of language appropriate for this task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are several error-free sentences, and your control of grammar is generally good. However, there are some recurring errors: 'peoples's' (should be 'people's'), 'have may end up' (redundant modal verbs), and 'loosing' (should be 'losing'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for small punctuation and spelling slips, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
