Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dressing well is a form of portraying one's character. People usually tend to dress well. However, due to globalization, the judgement of dressing now depends significantly on the global fashion trend. Since the emergence of social media, people's dressing sense continue to change over time. Social media or global fashion trends thus influence people on how they should put a dress on or what kinds of dress people should wear. This influence has some negative impacts on different society or culture, as some cultures or religion are conservative about attires. Despite the negatives, I believe global fashion trend is a positive thing if one can follow it accordingly with proper consideration.

Fashion trends continue to change over time. As the current world is at the peak of globalization, trends seem to surface faster than before. Coming from Bangladesh, this community and cluture is very biased toward western fashion. Whenever a style gets trendy, people try to follow the new trend immediately. People feel more confident when they dress in a certain manner. And, it actually depends on the global fashion trend, like what types of suit or pant are currently trending. Even in different occasion, people are judged by their attire. Therefore, it has become somewhat important to follow global fashion trends, so that one can properly blend in different social gatherings. From my perspective global fashion trend has become this much influential because of the social media influencers.

While it's a good thing to follow fashion trends, it has some adverse effect on society too. In our country, even if younger generation find global fashion trends fascinating, older one prefer to stick to the style, which were widely acceptable during their time. Also, as we are a muslim country, where most of the people are practicing, people do not take it too well, when one try to mimic global fashion trend. Becuase of this, some people get violent towards the ones who are following western trends and end up having violent clashes. I do not completely disagree, that sometimes the global community promotes inappropriate fashion which are not acceptable in respected societies. Often, social media influencers tend to promote inappropriate global fashion trends to get into TV shows or to perform as a brand ambassador of a particular brand. But the general people usually do not know the reasons behind promoting these type of things. They just follow the trend.

Even though, I believe, the advantages of the influence of global fashion trends overweights the disadvantages if followed properly without disrupting the communal harmony.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the influence of global fashion and the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout, particularly in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the influence of social media is mentioned, the explanation of 'how' it has become influential could be more detailed. The discussion on the negative impacts, specifically the cultural clashes in Bangladesh, is relevant but could be better balanced with more concrete examples of the 'positive' aspects mentioned in the thesis. Overall, the response is well-focused, though some arguments remain at a surface level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'Despite the negatives', 'Therefore', and 'While it's a good thing', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved for better cohesion. For instance, the transition between the influence of social media and the specific cultural context of Bangladesh feels a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'globalization', 'attires', and 'communal harmony'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'put a dress on' (instead of 'dress oneself' or 'choose attire') and 'the older one' (referring to the older generation). There is also some repetition of phrases like 'global fashion trend'. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise vocabulary and avoid repetitive phrasing, demonstrating a wider range of lexical items related to sociology and fashion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('people's dressing sense continue to change', 'older one prefer'), article usage ('in different occasion'), and minor spelling errors ('Becuase', 'cluture'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but control over these is inconsistent. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article consistency would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
