Student answer (Band 7.0)

Global fashion trends have become a powerful influence on the way people dress and express themselves. This is mainly because of social media, international brands and the increasing connection between different countries. Although this trend has some disadvantages, I believe it is generally a positive development.

One major reason for the influence of global fashion is the rapid growth of social media. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube allow people to see the latest styles worn by celebrities, influencers and fashion designers around the world. As a result, a trend that starts in one country can become popular internationally within a very short time. In addition, international clothing brands make similar products available in many countries, which makes it easier for people to follow global trends.

I believe this development has several positive aspects. First, people have more choices in terms of clothing and can use fashion to express their personalities. Second, global fashion can encourage cultural exchange, as people become interested in clothing styles from other countries. For example, young people in Bangladesh can easily adopt Korean or Western fashion while still maintaining elements of their traditional clothing.

However, there are also some negative effects. Constant exposure to new trends can encourage excessive shopping and create pressure to look fashionable. This may lead to unnecessary spending and increased clothing waste.

In conclusion, global fashion has become influential mainly because of social media and international brands. Despite some environmental and social drawbacks, I believe it is a largely positive development because it provides greater choice and encourages cultural interaction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt clearly. You have identified the causes of global fashion influence (social media and international brands) and provided a clear position on whether it is a positive or negative development. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of how social media facilitates the rapid spread of trends. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion on the 'positive' aspect by providing a more detailed example of how cultural exchange specifically impacts societal values, rather than just mentioning clothing styles. Overall, the response is balanced and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition,' 'First,' 'Second,' and 'However,' to signal transitions between points. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between the causes of fashion trends and their subsequent impacts is well-managed throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, such as 'excessive shopping,' 'cultural exchange,' and 'constant exposure.' The language is natural and conveys your meaning precisely. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, it stays within a fairly standard range. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated or topic-specific collocations (e.g., 'consumerist culture' or 'homogenization of style'). However, there are no significant errors in word choice, and the vocabulary used is consistently appropriate for the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences using 'although,' 'as a result,' and 'which.' The grammar is highly accurate, with very few errors. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly to support the flow of ideas. The control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement is consistent. Because the majority of your sentences are error-free and you show a good command of complex structures, this meets the criteria for a high band score.
