Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many aspects of the way individuals dress these days are influenced by worldwide fashion trends. This easy will discuss how global fashion trends have become a strong influence on people’s lives and I believe it is a negative development.

The way people dress is influenced by various factors such as culture, family background, social media and religion but majority of people’s dressing is now affected by global fashion trends because there is a new fashion trend every day and the fashion item available for people to purchase is dependent on the current trend, these encourages people to follow the trend. Another reason why most people are influenced by the current global style is due to peer pressure because people don’t want to be out fashioned. Therefore, everyone wants to buy and wear the same outfit in order to keep up with the latest fashion trend around the world.

I strongly believe this is a negative effect because everyone should feel free to dress how they want to dress instead of being persuaded to follow the latest trends. We live in a world where fashion constantly changes and if people keep changing due to the current trends, it can lead to lack of confidence and loss of self identity. The worldwide fashion trend encourages people to wear similar clothes with others. For example, Muslim religion requires women to wear hijabs to cover their head but they will avoid wearing it because the current fashion trend is to wear a wig and expose your hair.

In conclusion, although global fashion trends have become a great factor that influences people’s lives, I strongly believe it is a negative effect because it encourages peer pressure in individuals and leads to lack of confidence.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the influence of global fashion and the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention peer pressure and the availability of goods, these points could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis. The example regarding the hijab is a good attempt to illustrate the loss of identity, but it is slightly underdeveloped in terms of how global trends specifically force this change. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more thorough explanation of the 'why' and 'how' behind your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. There is a clear introduction and conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Another reason', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions could be more sophisticated. For instance, the second paragraph relies heavily on simple conjunctions. To achieve a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid, rather than relying on a repetitive structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'global fashion trends', 'peer pressure', and 'self-identity'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'out fashioned' (which should be 'out of fashion') and 'easy' instead of 'essay'. To improve, aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary. Avoid repetitive phrasing and focus on using words that precisely convey your intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'these encourages' should be 'this encourages', and 'majority of people’s dressing' is awkward phrasing. There are also some punctuation issues and minor errors in subject-verb agreement. To reach a higher band, focus on proofreading for these small errors and attempt to use a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, while ensuring they remain accurate.
