Student answer (Band 6.5)

Global fashion has, in recent times, become quite a string influence on people's lives. Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends. Although there have been positive outcomes out of this development, I believe that it largely has a negative effect on people's lives as a whole.

One clear impact of globalization of fashion is the erosion of local or traditional fashion identity. People my feel pressurized to adopt new and trending fashion in an attempt to make their dressing sense stay relevant. Apart from the obvious pressure to dress a certain way, this leads to the slow but inevitable move away from the person's cultural and traditional clothing, or even a personal style. Once one has completely adopted global fashion, they no longer feel the need to preserve their cultural or personal identity by wearing clothes that reflect it. They feel that they would rather 'fit in' with the crowd by adopting what everyone else has.

In relation to this, another negative impact can be seen in the form of local weavers, vendors and businesses losing their jobs. If people start beginning to prefer global brands only, local vendors will be the first ones to take a hit. They will either have to adapt to the changing fashion landscape or will have to lose their jobs entirely.

In conclusion, I would say that the influence of global fashion on the everyday person has been largely negative. I believe that people mustn't feel like they must conform to a trend in order for them to feel validated, and instead must explore themselves to find their own fashion identity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the influence of global fashion and the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear from the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the erosion of cultural identity and the economic impact on local vendors are relevant points, they are not fully extended with concrete examples or deeper analysis. The essay remains somewhat general, and the discussion on how global fashion became such a strong influence is touched upon only briefly. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or a more detailed explanation of the mechanisms behind this influence, such as the role of social media or celebrity culture.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One clear impact', 'In relation to this', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas could be smoother, and some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the relationship between sentences is more tightly woven through a wider variety of linking words and better referencing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'erosion', 'pressurized', and 'landscape'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'string influence' (should be 'strong') and 'start beginning to prefer' (redundant). The range is sufficient to convey the message, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would enhance the lexical quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'People my feel' (should be 'may') and 'mustn't feel like they must conform... in order for them to feel validated' (slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are minor slips that occur throughout the text. The control of grammar is sufficient for communication, but the frequency of errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy will help improve this score.
