Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Global fashion trends have become quite a popular phenomenon in recent times. People tend to follow mainstreaming fashions rather than sticking to their own style. This can highly contribute to building communities in fashion world and bringing people together. However, I think the negative aspects of following fashion trends outweigh the positive sides.

One of the major reasons why people get heavily influenced when it comes to fashion is the over consumption of social media. Social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X or even article and websites always air newest fashion trends. Therefore the users of these social media sites tend to fall into the trap of following certain styles. For instance, when someone sees their favourite celebrity wearing something niche, it creates an intriguing pressure on the individual to follow the same or even close to that certain style.

Whereas there is completely nothing wrong with following trends, this is slowly making the diversity in cultural attires and styles to disappear. Another significant drawback of the influence of global fashion trend is over consumerism. Trends are bound to change from time to time, keeping up with it can lead to people buying unnecessary items. This can have a detrimental impact on the environment as well as making people spend unnecessary money on clothes.

In my view, trends are fun to follow ocassionally, but people should not make it normal to always keep up with the pressure of following global fashion trends. Every individual should dress according to their own personality and preferred style rather than dressing alike to everyone else.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the influence of global fashion and your opinion on whether this is positive or negative. Your position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout. The ideas regarding social media influence and the environmental impact of over-consumerism are relevant and well-supported. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is more balanced; for instance, the positive aspect mentioned in the introduction (building communities) is not explored in the body paragraphs, which makes the argument feel slightly one-sided. Overall, the response is focused and directly answers the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as the role of social media or the negative impacts of consumerism. You use cohesive devices like 'Therefore', 'Whereas', and 'In my view' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be more sophisticated to better connect the cause (social media) with the consequence (environmental impact). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'phenomenon', 'detrimental impact', and 'over-consumerism'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'mainstreaming fashions' instead of 'mainstream fashion' and 'article and websites' which should be 'articles and websites'. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The spelling is generally accurate, with the exception of 'ocassionally', which should be 'occasionally'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'diversity in cultural attires and styles to disappear' (should be 'causing the diversity... to disappear') and 'keeping up with it' (referring to a plural noun 'trends'). Punctuation is generally handled well, though some sentences could be refined for better clarity. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. To move to a higher band, focus on increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement in more complex sentences.
