Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, global fashion has a strong influence on the way people dress. People can see new fashion trends from different countries very easily. In my opinion, social media, celebrities and online shopping are the main reasons for this influence. I think global fashion has both positive and negative effects, but it is more negative for people.

Firstly, social media has a very big role in global fashion. People use Instagram, TikTok and other apps every day, where they see new clothes and fashion styles. Many influencers and celebrities also show their clothes on social media. Because of this, people want to wear the same clothes and follow the latest trends. For example, when a famous person wears a particular dress, many young people try to buy a similar dress.

Another reason for online shopping is we can see and buy online clothes easily while sitting at home. There are very new different websites available now with new and different styles and designs. That is good thing in global fashion nowadays.

On the positive side, global fashion gives people more choices. People can try different styles and learn about fashion from other cultures. It can also help people to feel more confident about their appearance.

However, I believe it has more negative effects. People sometimes spend too much money on clothes just because they are in fashion. Also, they may compare themselves with celebrities and feel unhappy about their own appearance. Fast fashion can also create more waste because people buy new clothes and throw away old ones quickly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the influence of global fashion and the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention social media and online shopping as reasons, the explanation could be more deeply explored with more specific examples beyond just mentioning Instagram or TikTok. The discussion on the negative aspects is more developed than the positive ones, creating a slight imbalance. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported by a more detailed explanation or a more nuanced example to fully flesh out your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the role of social media or the negative impacts of fast fashion. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Another reason', 'On the positive side', and 'However' to guide the reader. While these are effective, the flow between some sentences is a bit mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., using pronouns or synonyms to refer back to previous ideas) is more varied to improve the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. You use topic-specific terms like 'global fashion trends', 'influencers', 'online shopping', and 'fast fashion'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler vocabulary (e.g., 'very big role', 'good thing', 'new clothes'). To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate more precise, less common lexical items and collocations. For instance, instead of 'very big role', you could use 'significant impact' or 'profound influence'. Your spelling is generally accurate throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You are able to construct clear sentences, and your meaning is always easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'There are very new different websites' (which is slightly awkward phrasing) and 'That is good thing' (missing an article). While you attempt complex sentences, they are often straightforward. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, and pay closer attention to articles and word order to minimize these occasional errors.
