Student answer (Band 6.5)

The fashion industry has evolved considerably that global fashion trends influence the way people dress today in many aspects. This is largely because people follow popular celebrities and social media influencers these days. I believe that the positive aspects of this development outweigh its negative consequences.

Celebrities and influencers encourage young people to follow international trends. They create engaging content and promote products in a way that appeals directly to their audience. For example, many people idolize Bollywood actors and like to dress in the same way. Furthermore, global brands and fashionable clothing have become increasingly accessible to consumers. The growth of online shopping and e-commerce platforms has also enabled people to purchase clothing from international brands with ease.

Fashion allows people to learn about the diverse cultures and traditions of other nations. The way people dress globally provides insight into their cultures and heritage. As a result, people can develop a greater appreciation for other cultures and find common ground with individuals from different backgrounds. Consumers have the freedom of choice when variety of clothing options are available. Moreover, competition among global brands can make fashionable clothing more affordable. However, global fashion can create social pressure, making people feel compelled to follow the latest trends. Nevertheless, this problem can be mitigated by making conscious purchasing decisions.

In conclusion, I firmly believe the positive influence of global fashion trends outweigh their negative consequences. Greater consumer choice, affordable clothing and increased cultural awareness are more significant benefits than the social pressure created by changing fashion trends.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying the influence of celebrities and social media as drivers of fashion trends and providing a clear stance that the development is positive. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, particularly in the discussion of cultural exchange and consumer choice. However, the development of the 'negative' side is somewhat brief compared to the positive arguments. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples of how social pressure manifests, perhaps by discussing the environmental impact of 'fast fashion' or the psychological toll of unrealistic beauty standards, which would add more depth to your analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Ideas follow a logical progression, moving from the causes of fashion influence to the benefits and finally the drawbacks. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore,' 'As a result,' and 'Nevertheless' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the argument. The flow is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your line of reasoning throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'mitigated by making conscious purchasing decisions' and 'diverse cultures and traditions' are used appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common items, though some word choices could be more sophisticated. For instance, 'idolize' and 'appeals directly' are good, but the essay relies on some repetitive structures. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations related to the fashion industry or sociological impacts to show greater flexibility and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. There are a few minor slips, such as the opening sentence: 'The fashion industry has evolved considerably that global fashion trends influence...' which should be 'evolved to such an extent that...'. Additionally, there is a subject-verb agreement error in the conclusion: 'the positive influence... outweigh' should be 'outweighs'. Despite these occasional errors, your control over complex structures is generally good, and the punctuation is accurate throughout.
