Student answer (Band 6.0)

People's lifestyle in today's world is highly influenced by global fashion. It is often argued that following global trends give you a sense of satisfaction, while others believe not only is it the waste of money but also a so-called unfinished race. I believe it's a negative development to some extent, and this essay will explain why.

On the one hand, the world is making progress day by day, which not only made people classist and status conscious but also continue to impart negative impact on deprived people. For instance, there is a trend of dowry in Asian countries, where following global trends like wearing designer bridal dress has become increasingly widespread, and low-income parents are suffering a lot due to limited resources.

The other disadvantage of following global fashion trend is that people are trying their best to have luxury and designer dresses although they hardly able to make it. It would require them to face several problems and often commit a crime. Let's take students, as an example, who come from disadvantaged background and enrolled in prestigious and highly paid university. Their fashion choices strongly influence by their environment in which others are currently following global trends. Though, adopting lifestyle accordingly could be quite expensive and crime driven for them.

Having said that, fashion dresses are for people, it can be followed by elite class and those who can afford it without putting themselves under great pressure. This can take them to the level of achievement and satisfaction without harming the interests and self respect of others.

In conclusion, wearing designer and expensive dresses is a good way to present yourself but it should be followed according to affordability and reliability without indulging in any sort of criminal activity. Overall, its negative aspects are more than its positive.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the influence of global fashion and the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding the 'dowry' system is a specific example, but the link between global fashion trends and criminal activity among students is asserted rather than logically explained, making the argument feel slightly forced. To reach a higher band, the essay needs to provide more nuanced reasoning rather than relying on extreme examples like criminal behavior, which may not be the most representative consequence of fashion trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'The other disadvantage', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Though, adopting lifestyle accordingly could be quite expensive'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the third paragraph where the connection between university students and criminal activity lacks a smooth logical bridge. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the flow between sentences could be more sophisticated to achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common items like 'classist', 'status conscious', and 'disadvantaged background'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'it is the waste of money' (should be 'a waste'), 'crime driven', and 'fashion dresses'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the argument. Expanding the range of academic collocations would help elevate the lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the waste of money'), subject-verb agreement ('fashion choices strongly influence by'), and verb forms ('they hardly able to make it'). Some sentences are fragmented or lack necessary prepositions. While the writer attempts complex structures, the control over these is inconsistent. To improve, the student should focus on basic grammatical accuracy and ensure that complex sentences are constructed with correct tense and agreement.
