Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is an ongoing debate about whether the global fashion trends influence the way people dress nowadays. With the globalisation, and the advance of technology, people tend to follow fashion trends to become a part of the society. I believe that this trend has a negative impact for the overall society.

With the advance of internet and the globalisation, there are two main reason why many people follow the global fashion trends nowadays. Firstly, with the social medias, individuals spend more time looking to how influencers act and dress. As a result, people around the world are more likely to dress according to what they see in the social medias. Furthermore, the fast-fashion sector became more and more common after the globalisation. This means that people around the globe can dress the exact same way because the same type of clothes are sold anywhere in the world.

Unfortunatelly, this development has a negative impact to the environment. This is because the waste created by the fast-fashion sector is one of major problems for the environment. Studies show that clothing factories produce way more than what they sell. As a result, they need to send the over-production to the landfill. Another problem with the global fashion trends is that, usually they do not last longer than a season. This mean that even though the clothes are sold, people will throw it away in a couple of months. The result is more and more environment damages.

To conclude, the global fashion has a strong influence in people's life after the advance of the internet. In my opinion, this trend has a significant impact to the environment because of the over-production of clothes and how easily people can throw away their dresses.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the influence of global fashion and the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout. The ideas regarding social media and fast fashion are relevant and well-supported with examples like over-production and landfill waste. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully developed; for instance, you could briefly mention a counter-argument or provide a more specific example of how global fashion trends have changed local cultural identities to add depth to your analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'As a result' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes of the trend from the environmental consequences. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is always smooth and natural rather than relying on standard linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'globalisation', 'fast-fashion sector', and 'over-production'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'environment damages' (should be 'environmental damage') and 'looking to how influencers act' (should be 'looking at'). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise, less common lexical items related to the topic, such as 'consumerism', 'disposable culture', or 'sustainability'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'With the globalisation' (no article needed), 'two main reason' (should be plural 'reasons'), and 'social medias' (media is already plural). Additionally, there are punctuation and article errors throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of articles to improve your accuracy.
