IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.

How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, global fashion has become an important part of people's lives, particularly because of social media and the rapid growth of online shopping. From my perspective, this is largely a positive development because it gives people more choices in wearing clothes and allows them to learn about different cultures.

One major and primary reason for the influence of global fashion is the widespread use of social media and online platforms. People now have easy access to the clothes worn by celebrities, influencers and people from different countries. Consequently, new fashions and styles can become popular around the world within a short period of time. Another important factor is online shopping. People can purchase clothes from international brands without travelling to another country. This has made global fashion much more accessible than it was in the past.

I believe this trend has several positive effects. Firstly, people have a wider range of clothing styles to choose from, which allows them to express their personality and preferences. Secondly, global fashion can encourage cultures off different countries. For example, people may become interested in the traditional clothing and styles of other countries after seeing them online. However, in this case, I also want to mention a suggestion that people should avoid following every trend blindly and should make sensible choosing and buying of clothes whether they buy from market or from online social media platforms like Daraz, Alibaba; some popular online platforms.

In conclusion, I would say that social media and online shopping have made global function very influential. Although, it has some disadvantages but these disadvantages can't outweigh its advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying the drivers of global fashion (social media, online shopping) and expressing a clear position on its impact. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. However, the development of the 'positive' argument is somewhat superficial. For instance, the point about 'encouraging cultures' is a bit vague and could have been better supported with a more concrete example of how fashion fosters cross-cultural understanding. The conclusion is a bit brief and could have better summarised the main points to provide a more comprehensive final thought. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects. Cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'another important factor', and 'firstly' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. However, there are some minor issues with cohesion, such as the slightly awkward transition in the final paragraph: 'Although, it has some disadvantages but these disadvantages can't outweigh its advantages.' This sentence structure is slightly repetitive and could be improved for better flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at using topic-specific language like 'international brands' and 'global fashion trends'. However, there are some inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'make sensible choosing and buying of clothes' and 'global function' (likely a typo for 'fashion'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on more natural collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The use of specific brand names like 'Alibaba' is acceptable but could be integrated more smoothly into the academic tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'cultures off different countries' (should be 'of') and 'make sensible choosing and buying' (should be 'make sensible choices when buying'). Punctuation is mostly correct, though the sentence structure in the conclusion is slightly flawed. The student demonstrates a reasonable control of grammar, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy would help elevate the score in this criterion.
