Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, many people are influenced by global fashion trends when they choose what to wear. Fashion from different countries can now easily reach people through the internet and social media. There are several reasons why global fashion has become such a strong influence. In my opinion, this is mainly a positive development, although it also has some negative effects.
One major reason for the popularity of global fashion is the growth of social media. People can see the clothes worn by celebrities, influencers and other users on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. They may then become interested in similar clothes and follow the latest trends. Another reason is the expansion of international fashion companies. These companies advertise their products in many countries, which makes their styles available to a large number of people. For example, a fashion trend that becomes popular in the United States can quickly become popular in India because people can see it online.
I believe this development is mostly positive because people now have more choices about their appearance. They can try different styles and learn about clothing from other cultures. Fashion can also help people feel more confident when they are satisfied with their appearance. However, there are some disadvantages. People may spend too much money on new clothes because they want to follow every trend. In addition, fast fashion can encourage people to buy clothes that they do not really need.
In conclusion, global fashion has become a strong influence mainly because of social media and international businesses. Although it can encourage unnecessary spending, I believe it is generally a positive development because people have greater freedom and more choices in how they dress.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing clear reasons for the influence of global fashion and a balanced view on whether it is a positive or negative development. The position is clear throughout. While the ideas are relevant and logically presented, they could be further extended to reach a higher band. For instance, the discussion on 'fast fashion' is a strong point, but it could be supported with more specific examples or a deeper analysis of the environmental or social implications to demonstrate a more sophisticated level of development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is logical. Cohesive devices such as 'One major reason', 'Another reason', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow between sentences is smooth. To improve, the student could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices or use more sophisticated referencing to link ideas more fluidly between paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses appropriate terms such as 'global fashion trends', 'international fashion companies', and 'fast fashion'. While the range is adequate, it is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common vocabulary. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim to incorporate more precise, less common lexical items or idiomatic collocations that demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language, rather than relying on standard phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is accurate. The student successfully uses complex structures, such as 'Although it can encourage unnecessary spending, I believe it is generally a positive development'. There are no significant errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to use a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with greater flexibility and precision throughout the entire response.
