Student answer (Band 6.0)

The fashion industry is influencing how trends are changing and what people wear.

With the development of technology it is quite easier to make anything go viral and if people like that enough it becomes a trend. With the social media people are well connected the world is a global village and people like to keep an eye on what's going on around the world. Models and all the influencers are on social media and million of people follow their daily routine and they like to adopt whatever they like in their life. For example, skinny jeans were in fashion back in 80s and everyone liked to wear them. However, the trend changed and people calling that obsolete and they are now moving towards baggy jeans. Everyone who wears baggy jeans is considered modern and anyone who is still having skinny jeans fit is judged for his choice.

Although it's good to stay connected and enjoy life wearing amazing fits but we are seeing more negative impacts than positive. Beauty industry is manipulating young girls and boys to do beauty treatments, surgeries to look more acceptable and have the features as they want. Every other female is now getting beauty treatments, surgeries, model and influencers are normalizing that which is becoming easier because of social media.

In conclusion, fashion trends are good if they are only limited to dressing well and having good attire, however it tends to become negative once we start doing too many artificial treatments just trying to fit in or while being influenced by wrong people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the influence of global fashion and the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you mention social media and influencers as drivers of fashion, the explanation of how these factors specifically create such a strong influence could be more analytical. The discussion on the negative impacts is focused heavily on beauty standards and surgery, which is relevant but slightly shifts the focus away from 'fashion' toward 'beauty industry' trends. To reach a higher band, ensure your arguments are more balanced and directly linked to the core topic of fashion trends throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, you rely heavily on simple transitions like 'However' and 'In conclusion'. There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect ideas within paragraphs, such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in light of this'. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the transition between the discussion of jeans and the shift to the beauty industry, which feels abrupt. Improving the flow between sentences would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, using terms like 'obsolete', 'manipulating', and 'global village'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'having skinny jeans fit' instead of 'wearing skinny jeans' and 'do beauty treatments' instead of 'undergo beauty treatments'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To improve, focus on learning collocations—words that naturally go together—and try to incorporate more topic-specific academic vocabulary related to sociology or consumer behavior.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the fluency of the text. Examples include 'With the social media people are well connected' (missing article/preposition), 'million of people' (should be 'millions of'), and 'everyone who is still having skinny jeans fit is judged' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and refining your control over complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
