Student answer (Band 6.0)

Global fashion trends are strongly influencing people for choosing their outfits in many aspects of the way such as global media, social media, frequent geographical movements, and so on. I believe that this can be both positive and negative developments in different circumstances.

First and foremost, there are several positive sides of following the global fashion trends. For instance, individuals can be addressed to different cultures and gain more knowledge. It broadens their perspectives about different countries and contexts that enables them to share knowledge and develop mutual respect. This development not only improves their understanding with each other, but also makes them to exchange their creativity and leads to innovation in fashion. In addition, fashion industries can flourish their businesses with new ideas and innovation that ultimately leads to economic growth in the long run.

Furthermore, following global trends too much leads to losing cultural identity gradually of each particular ethnic group especially the financially and politically dominated ones. This is already evident in the under developed and developing countries who are struggling to conserve their culture due to the influence of the updated global trends. For example, in Bangladesh, young people are giving up their traditional fashion and embracing the western trends day by day.

In conclusion, although, people are benefiting from following the global fashion trends by broadening their knowledge, there is also fear of losing cultural identity due to this development. So, it is high time we choose what can influence us and in what extent they can influence.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining how global fashion has become a strong influence and giving an opinion on whether this development is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout the essay. The student supports ideas with relevant examples, such as the cultural exchange and the specific mention of Bangladesh giving up traditional fashion for western trends. However, some ideas could be slightly more extended. For instance, the discussion on economic growth is a bit brief. Overall, the task is well-addressed and meets the requirements effectively, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, starting with an introduction, moving to positive and negative body paragraphs, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as "First and foremost," "Furthermore," and "In conclusion." Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph having a distinct central topic. Although some referencing and transitional phrasing feel slightly mechanical (e.g., "in such aspects of the way such as"), the overall structure allows for a smooth reading experience.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task with some attempts at less common lexical items, such as "geographical movements," "cultural identity," and "mutual respect." However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as "strongly influencing people for choosing their outfits" and "losing cultural identity gradually of each particular ethnic group." Furthermore, phrasing like "the financially and politically dominated ones" is slightly awkward. While communication is not impeded, these lexical slips prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., "countries who are struggling to conserve their culture"). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, such as "this can be both positive and negative developments" (plural agreement error), "makes them to exchange" (unnecessary infinitive), and "in what extent they can influence" (wrong preposition). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without significant difficulty.
