Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Global fashion trends are strongly influencing people in choosing their outfits in many aspects of the way such as global media, social media, frequent geographical movements, and so on. I believe that this can be both a positive and negative development in different circumstances.
First and foremost, there are several positive sides of following global fashion trends. For instance, individuals can be exposed to different cultures and gain more knowledge. It broadens their perspectives about different countries and contexts that enables them to share knowledge and develop mutual respect. This development not only improves their understanding of each other, but also enables them to exchange their creativity and leads to innovation in fashion. In addition, fashion industries can flourish their businesses with new ideas and innovation that ultimately leads to economic growth in the long run.
Furthermore, following global trends too much leads to the gradual loss of the cultural identity of each particular ethnic group especially the financially and politically dominated ones. This is already evident in the underdeveloped and developing countries that are struggling to conserve their culture due to the influence of the updated global trends. For example, in Bangladesh, young people are giving up their traditional fashion and embracing western trends day by day.
In conclusion, although people are benefiting from following global fashion trends by broadening their knowledge, there is also fear of losing cultural identity due to this development. So, it is high time for us to choose what can influence us and to what extent they can influence.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: how global fashion has become a strong influence, and whether this is a positive or negative development. The student presents a clear position throughout the essay, stating that it brings both advantages and drawbacks. Ideas are generally well supported, such as mentioning cultural exchange, innovation, and economic growth in the positive paragraph, and the erosion of local cultural identity in developing nations like Bangladesh in the negative paragraph. However, the explanation of 'how' global fashion became influential in the introduction ('global media, social media, frequent geographical movements, and so on') is somewhat brief and lists factors rather than fully explaining the mechanism. Overall, the task is well covered, satisfying the criteria for a Band 6.5 to 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, starting with an introduction, moving to positive impacts, negative impacts, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and paragraph links occasionally feel a bit mechanical or formulaic. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. The overall arrangement is coherent, making it easy for the reader to follow the writer's argument, aligning with a Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and academic phrases such as 'cultural identity', 'mutual respect', 'financial and politically dominated ones', and 'economic growth in the long run'. There are some minor inaccuracies or awkward word choices, such as 'following global trends too much leads to' and 'fashion industries can flourish their businesses' (flourish is intransitive here). Nevertheless, spelling is generally accurate, and the vocabulary choices do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 6.5 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional-like structures, as seen in 'individuals can be exposed to different cultures and gain more knowledge' and 'countries that are struggling to conserve their culture'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'in many aspects of the way such as' in the opening sentence, and 'to what extent they can influence' lacking an object. Punctuation is generally sound. Since the errors do not impede communication and there is a reasonable variety of sentence structures, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
