Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, the way people dress is mostly influenced by fashion trends around the world. This is mainly because of excessive use of social media and I believe that this is a negative development which causes waste of money.

One of the major reasons is that technology is increasing rapidly these days. Everyone uses personal phones with the connectivity of the internet. People often spend a large amount of their time using various social media platforms, and they also tend to follow famous as well as contemporary fashion trends. Moreover, individuals attempt what they see on several apps, and mostly they influenced by the viral trends. Their choices may begin to depend on the tastes of the celebrities and influencers they often keep up with. For instance, people often try to purchase clothes and accessories that resemble those worn by the models they regularly follow on social media, as they want to imitate their style. Consequently, individuals start to prioritise the tastes of renowned personalities over their own opinions.

However, I believe that this is undoubtedly a negative development. It leads to a substantial financial waste because people frequently purchase various products that they do not really need, as they want to look alike their favorite models. A large number of individuals have developed an over-reliance on the choices and opinons of others, also they may have stopped thinking about what they really need and what is non-significant for them. Therefore, people waste an immense amount of money just to follow the online trends. For example, the younger generation may overlook their basic necessities and neglect their family responsibilities. Instead, they may focus primarily on adopting popular fashion trends, which change regularly, even when these trends are beyond their financial means. That is why, it is affecting their economy conditions and relationships.

In conclusion, global fashion trends encourage people to follow up-to-date online fashion through social media, but this behavior can lead to unnecessary spending.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the causes of global fashion's strong influence—such as the rapid growth of technology and social media—and expressing a clear position that this is a negative development resulting in financial waste. The position is maintained throughout the response. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the younger generation neglecting their basic necessities and family responsibilities to follow online trends. However, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise or slightly repeat points regarding financial waste across paragraphs. Overall, the task is covered well, aligning closely with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The introduction outlines the writer's stance, the body paragraphs explore the causes and negative impacts respectively, and a concise conclusion wraps up the essay. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct thematic breaks. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Consequently', and 'In conclusion' are employed to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the progression of arguments from causes to consequences.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'contemporary fashion trends', 'renowned personalities', 'over-reliance', and 'basic necessities'. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, word formation, and collocation, such as 'attempt what they see' instead of 'adopt what they see', 'look alike their favorite models' instead of 'look like', and 'economy conditions' instead of 'economic conditions'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey meaning clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-like structures effectively (e.g., 'People often spend a large amount of their time using various social media platforms, and they also tend to follow...'). There are some noticeable errors in grammar, such as the missing verb in 'mostly they influenced by the viral trends' and minor preposition or spelling slips like 'opinons'. Punctuation is generally sound, and while errors do occur, they rarely impede communication, placing the writing comfortably within the Band 6 territory.
