Student answer (Band 6.0)
The fashion trends nowadays influence the choices of people in clothes. It is argued by some people that its a positive development and shoud be promoted while others say it damages the local clothing businesses and culture. This essay will discuss both the pros and corns of this development. In my opinion, overall it is a positive development. However, protecting local businesses is also important.
Global fashion industry has strongly influenced people around the world. Most people in recent years tend to catch up with global trends due to the widespread use of social media. They are inspired by the way global celebrities dress. As a result people adapt to fashion trends around the world.
Modern fashion trends bring good benefits to the people. People around the world seem to have same sense of fashion. This helps people to have more things in common which leads to better connectivity among them. For example, trourists from different regions may meet and find identical clothes or shoes which can be a better conversation starting point for them. Secondly, due to global fashion trends, everyday clothing items are more accessible to everyone in almost every part of the world. People do not need to travel to big cities for shopping as they can find these items nearby. For example, every major clothing brand is available in my hometown as well nowadays.
Despite these positive developments, there are some drawbacks of these growing global trends in the fashion industry. Firstly, it damages the economy of local fashion industry. If more and more people are buying products from international brands, traditional clothing businesses may struggle to keep running. This may lead to the loss of many jobs locally. For example, traditonal clothes in Pakistan are no longer available in the market as they could not compete with international products. Similarly, it is a loss to the local culture as well. Preservation of culture becomes difficult if local industry disappears. Conserving local culture is essential for our future generations.
In summary, global fashion trends are successful in influencing people's choices in dressing. There are some positive developments of this including better connectivity among people and accessibility of products around the world. However, negative impacts include loss to local fashion businesses and culture. I believe that global trends are inevitable and should be embraced. Although, protecting local industry and culture is also essential.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt. The candidate identifies the causes of global fashion influence, namely social media and global celebrities, and expresses a clear position that the development is overall positive while acknowledging the drawbacks regarding local businesses and culture. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as tourists connecting over similar clothing items and the reference to traditional clothes in Pakistan. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, meeting the Band 7 criteria.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently structured into logical paragraphs, beginning with a clear introduction that outlines the essay's direction, followed by distinct body paragraphs handling causes, benefits, and drawbacks respectively, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Despite these positive developments', and 'In summary' are used effectively to guide the reader, although paragraphing and transitions are slightly formulaic, placing it comfortably at a Band 7 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The writer uses a sufficient range of vocabulary that allows for some flexibility and precision, employing terms such as 'inevitable', 'embraced', 'preservation', and 'accessibility'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, although there are a few minor lexical slips such as 'pros and corns' (a typo for pros and cons) and 'adapt' instead of 'adopt'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'If more and more people are buying products from international brands...'). There are some grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, such as missing apostrophes ('its a positive development', 'shoud be promoted'), missing articles ('Global fashion industry'), and a run-on sentence structure in the second paragraph ('As a result people adapt'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and fit the Band 6 descriptor well.
