Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address both parts of the prompt regarding why global fashion has become influential and whether it is a positive or negative development, adopting a clear negative stance. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For example, the student argues that fashion causes mental health problems and crime because youngsters pressure parents to buy expensive clothes, but this link is underdeveloped and lacks specific, well-reasoned support. Furthermore, the second body paragraph introduces skincare issues and academic performance superficially without adequate elaboration. While the prompt's requirements are addressed in broad strokes, the arguments frequently rely on sweeping generalizations and lack depth. These limitations place the performance at a Band 5.0 level according to the task achievement criteria.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which provides a basic organizational structure. However, progression is frequently hindered by repetitive phrasing and a lack of clear overall direction. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or misused, such as 'To elaborate,' 'Moreover,' and 'To explain,' which appear rigidly and disrupt the natural flow of ideas. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in sentences like 'fashion reaches on global level and it lead many problems.' Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs suffers due to disjointed sentence transitions and abrupt shifts in focus from mental health to crime, and finally to skin issues. These features align with the Band 5.0 descriptors for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited and repetitive vocabulary that is minimally adequate for the task. Words and phrases such as 'fashion trend,' 'expensive clothes,' and 'luxury life' are used repeatedly throughout the text. There are also numerous word choice and collocation errors, such as 'fashion is become a trend,' 'pressurise to their parents to urchase,' and 'getting health issues.' Spelling errors are frequent, including 'thrends,' 'urchase,' 'acadamic,' 'performence,' and 'globaly.' These lexical limitations and frequent inaccuracies sometimes cause strain for the reader and prevent the vocabulary score from rising above a Band 4.5 or 5.0. Given the attempt to use some less common vocabulary despite errors, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writing displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic compound forms. Attempts at complex sentences frequently result in faulty grammar and significant structural errors, such as 'For live a luxury life many youngsters attempt crime to earn money for purchase expensive clothes' and 'due to just hype of a product people influenced by such prducts.' Frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'fashion is become,' 'many people getting'), and prepositions occur throughout the text. These persistent errors often cause difficulty for the reader and mean that error-free sentences are rare, placing the grammar performance firmly at a Band 4.5, rounded to a Band 5.0 due to the baseline communicative success.
