IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.

How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Global fashion trends have become an important part of people's daily lives, influencing not only what they wear but also how they express themselves. This influence has grown mainly because of social media, international brands and the increasing connection between different countries. In my opinion, although global fashion can create some social and environmental problems, it is largely a positive development.

One major reason for the strong influence of global fashion is the rapid growth of social media. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube allow people to see the clothing styles of celebrities, influencers and people from other countries within seconds. As a result, a fashion trend that begins in one country can quickly become popular worldwide. In addition, international brands have made fashionable clothing easily available in many parts of the world. Online shopping has further strengthened this trend because people can purchase clothes from foreign brands without travelling abroad.

I believe this development has several positive effects. Firstly, global fashion gives people more choices and allows them to express their personality and cultural interests through clothing. Secondly, it can increase cultural exchange because people become familiar with styles and traditions from different societies. For example, young people in Pakistan may combine traditional clothes such as shalwar kameez with modern international styles, creating a unique form of dress.

However, there are also some disadvantages. Constant exposure to new trends can encourage people to buy clothes they do not actually need, which may lead to unnecessary spending and contribute to environmental problems caused by fast fashion. Moreover, some individuals may feel pressured to follow expensive trends in order to fit in with their peers.

In conclusion, global fashion has become a powerful influence because social media, international brands and online shopping have connected consumers across the world. Despite some negative consequences, I believe its ability to provide greater choice, encourage self-expression and promote cultural exchange makes it a generally positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the task. The student clearly identifies why global fashion has become a strong influence (citing social media, international brands, and online shopping) and provides a clear position that it is largely a positive development, weighing both sides before concluding. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as young people in Pakistan combining traditional garments like the shalwar kameez with international styles. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, meeting all the requirements of Band 7 and leaning towards Band 8 for thorough development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with a well-structured introduction, followed by clear body paragraphs examining the causes, positive effects, and negative consequences, and ending with a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments without feeling mechanical. Paragraphing is managed skilfully and logically. The structure supports the arguments effectively, justifying a strong Band 7.5 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient and generally precise range of vocabulary suitable for an academic response. Phrases such as 'rapid growth', 'cultural exchange', 'unnecessary spending', and 'self-expression' demonstrate a good awareness of style and collocation. Less common items are attempted successfully, and spelling is accurate throughout. While the range of vocabulary is competent and allows for flexibility, it occasionally stops short of the fully fluent, flexible, and sophisticated idiom characteristic of higher bands. Nevertheless, the lexical choices communicate ideas with clarity and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writer displays a good variety of complex structures and uses them accurately. Sentences such as 'A fashion trend that begins in one country can quickly become popular worldwide' and 'Constant exposure to new trends can encourage people to buy clothes they do not actually need' show strong control over subordinate clauses. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. There are only very occasional minor slips, but these do not impede communication in any way. Grammar and punctuation are controlled to a high standard, fitting the Band 8 criteria well.
