Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing how global fashion has become influential and giving a clear opinion that it is a negative development by focusing on identity loss and over-spending. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and the position becomes slightly disjointed towards the end. For instance, the introduction mentions comparisons and identity, while the body paragraphs touch on sizing issues like 'brandymelbill' and cultural pressures in South Korea. While these are relevant examples, they are underdeveloped and the essay cuts off abruptly at the conclusion. This places the performance firmly in the Band 5 to 6 range. It addresses all parts, but some ideas remain unclear or insufficiently extended, leading to a score of 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates some overall organization with clear paragraph breaks and basic cohesive devices such as 'One of the major drawbacks' and 'On the other hand'. However, the progression of ideas is frequently hindered by awkward phrasing and confusing referencing. For instance, the transition between sentences in the second paragraph lacks smooth logical flow, and phrases like 'In conclusion, despite the apparent advantages of dress, I firmly belive this p' show a breakdown in structural cohesion due to the incomplete ending. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion often feels mechanical or faulty. These issues align with the Band 5 descriptor where organisation is present, but overall progression falters and cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or strained.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including terms like 'proliferation', 'e-commerce', 'consumption habits', and 'self-esteem'. However, there are frequent word-choice errors, awkward collocations, and incorrect word forms throughout the text. Examples include 'revealing their fashion sense will positively affected to their identity', 'indifferent styles' instead of 'uniform styles', and 'shopping shop called brandymelbill'. Additionally, repetition of words like 'appreance' (spelled 'apperance' and 'appreance') and 'individuals' detracts from precision. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic ideas, the noticeable errors and strained collocations restrict the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is low. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and prepositions that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. Notable errors include 'will positively affected to', 'which available for', 'which inevitably lead their dissatisfaction', and 'might ardous to find out'. Furthermore, subject-verb agreement issues and missing auxiliary verbs appear regularly, such as 'this high standard of beauty make people to be compared'. Complex structures are often faulty when attempted. Because errors are frequent and can cause some difficulty for the reader, this performance meets the criteria for Band 5.0.
