Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, the way people are dressing is increasingly influenced by fashion trends orginated by other countries. This influence by particular increases by social media trends, celebrity culture and the growth of the international markets. In my opinion, although global fashion has some disadvantages, it is largely positive development because it provides people with freedom and more opportunities.

One major reason for the spread of global fashion is due to the growth of the social medias. Platform like instagram, tiktok and youtube allow people to view the new styles from around the world. Celebrities, influencers and popular artists also play an vital role for the trend of fashion because the style and fashion are also copied by the followers. In addition, brands and companies use social medias platform to advertise and allow fast delivery services to the ordinary customers. Therefore, people depends on online delivery and avoid the local shops for traditional clothing styles.

I believe this development is positive. Firstly, global fashion gives people wider range of clothing style to choose. They can combine international trends with traditional outfits and can create their own styles. . For example, young people in Nepal may wear jeans, shirts or Korean-inspired clothing in their daily lives while still wearing traditional outfits such as saris or kurta-suruwals on cultural occasions. This allows people to express their personality while maintaining a connection with their culture.

However, there are some negative aspects. Constant pressure to follow new trends can encourage people to buy clothes they do not actually need, which may increase waste and unnecessary spending. It can also cause traditional clothing to become less common among younger generations. Nevertheless, these problems can be reduced if consumers make thoughtful choices rather than blindly following every trend.

In conclusion, global fashion has become a powerful influence mainly because of social media, celebrities, international brands and online shopping. Although it can encourage excessive consumption and weaken interest in traditional clothing, I believe its greater variety, cultural exchange and opportunities for self-expression make it a positive development overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt. The candidate clearly explains why global fashion has become a strong influence, citing social media trends, celebrity culture, and international markets. A clear position is maintained throughout, concluding that the trend is largely positive due to freedom of choice and self-expression. Ideas are extended and well-supported with relevant examples, such as the blending of global styles with traditional attire like saris or kurta-suruwals in Nepal. While some points could be explored in greater depth, the response meets all the requirements for a Band 7.0 by effectively covering both questions with a clear and developed position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to the causes of global fashion, the positive viewpoint, the counter-argument regarding negative aspects, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'In addition,' 'Firstly,' and 'However,' though some referencing is slightly repetitive or mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the argument. Overall, the coherence and cohesion of the response align comfortably with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'excessive consumption,' 'cultural occasion,' and 'self-expression.' However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and word-choice errors, such as 'trends orginated' (spelling), 'increase by' instead of 'driven by,' and 'the social medias' (unnecessary plural/article). Despite these slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly without impeding communication, fitting the Band 6.0 criteria well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The candidate demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and conditional thoughts effectively (e.g., 'In my opinion, although global fashion has some disadvantages, it is largely positive development...'). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout, such as 'the way people are dressing is' (tense choice), 'play an vital role' (article error), and 'people depends' (subject-verb agreement). There is also a stray double period in the third paragraph. These errors occur regularly but do not impede overall communication, placing the grammar comfortably at a Band 6.0.
