Student answer (Band 6.0)
Over the years, the choice of fashion is greatly inspired by trends that have been popularised internationally. This phenomenon is largely driven by the expansion of mass-market retail chains and digital media. In my opinion, this new era could lead to negative developments, although it is a accessible.
The advent of internet, led to introduction of multiple social media platforms, such as, Instagram, Tik Tok, and Facebook, which exposed individuals to visually appealing aesthetics created by influencers and celebrities. The viewers tend to draw inspiration from what their favourite influencer considers fashion, therefore demanding similar fashion, prompting businesses to mass produce their products. Moreover, with digital media, people living poles apart can get influenved by each other. For an instance, if a model is seen wearing an exceptional outfit on Loreal fashion week runway and have gained enormous compliments, the replicas of such outfits are designed quickly an delivered to common people, so they could feel a sense of connection with the model.
Despite the rapid growth of the influence fashion trends have on the dressing styles of people, there are numerous drawbacks, which individuals fail to attend to. The primary drawback reported is the gruesome effects fast-fashion has on the environment. The dramatic demands force businesses to overproduce the product, which later is disposed into landfills, due to ever changing fashion trends. Additionally, the chemical by-products are drained untreated into rivers and ocean, causing water pollution. Furthermore, the authenticity and self expression of an individual is often compromised when they get inspired by others online. Lastly, global trends represent a single culture, which leads to westernisation and loss of cultural heritage.
To summarise, global fashion greatly impact the daily lives of people, primarily due to increased exposure to social media and industrialised fast fashion. It must be noted that such practice is disadvantageous to not only the present generation, but also to the upcoming generations, in terms of environmental degradation and culture.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both the reasons for the global influence of fashion and evaluating whether this development is positive or negative. The writer presents a clear position, stating that it could lead to negative developments despite its accessibility. Ideas are appropriately extended and supported, particularly in the discussion of fast-fashion and its environmental impact, as well as the role of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Although the reasoning around cultural heritage and westernisation is slightly generalised, the main arguments are well-developed and directly relevant to the task question, earning a solid band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays clear logical organisation and a discernible overall progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct sections covering causes, environmental drawbacks, cultural concerns, and a summary. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'To summarise', though some referencing is slightly clunky or mechanical. The transition between sentences generally flows smoothly, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the student's train of thought throughout the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'popularised internationally', 'visually appealing aesthetics', and 'environmental degradation'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'it is a accessible' instead of 'accessible', 'get influenved' (spelling/collocation slip), and 'delivered to common people'. Despite these word-choice and mechanical errors, the vocabulary is varied enough to convey the intended meaning without significantly impeding communication, placing the response comfortably within the band 6 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like constructions (e.g., 'if a model is seen wearing...'). However, there are several grammatical and mechanical inaccuracies throughout the text, including article misuse ('The advent of internet'), comma splices, and incorrect preposition use ('delivered to common people' or 'disposed into landfills'). While these errors are noticeable and detract from the overall polish of the text, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points.
