Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring the reasons behind the influence of global fashion and offering an opinion on whether this trend is positive or negative. The student attempts to develop ideas regarding job creation and cultural loss. However, the reasoning in the negative impact section becomes somewhat extreme and illogical, particularly when linking fashion directly to issues like rape and family breakdown. While there is a clear position, the over-generalisation and weak support in the second half of the essay prevent the ideas from being fully and convincingly developed. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are addressed to a sufficient degree to meet the criteria for Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraph breaks separating the introduction, advantages, disadvantages, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'Talking about the advantages', 'In addition', and 'First'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in awkward transitional phrases like 'An example, is that human beings...'. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs occasionally feels disjointed due to phrasing and punctuation errors. Overall, the organizational structure meets the requirements for a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The writer attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for the topic, incorporating terms such as 'double-edged sword', 'financial ressources', 'substancial role', and 'identity'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'epanouishment' (likely a translation artifact), spelling slips like 'ressources' and 'disavantages', and collocations that do not sound entirely natural. Less common lexical items are attempted but lack precision and stylistic control. These errors do not seriously impede overall communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6.0 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in punctuation (such as spaces before commas and periods), subject-verb agreement issues ('people was connected'), and awkward article usage ('the global fashion'). While many sentences are understandable, grammatical and mechanical errors persist throughout the text, occasionally drawing the reader's attention away from the content. This performance is characteristic of a Band 5.5 response.
