IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.

How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, the way people dress is heavily influenced by global fashion trends. I believe that this is a negative development because people spend unnecessary money on clothes in the name of fashion and some people undermine themselves as they cannot follow these fashion trends. People can still look good in affordable and simple clothing which is not related to the fashion trends.

One of the main reason why I think this a negative thing because most people buy inessential expensive clothing with their hard earned money. Multimillion dollar clothing brands make a sense of fear of missing out among the people by launching a limited amount of clothing for a big price. The companies hire well-known social media influencers for the marketing to make the piece of clothing popular among the people, especially the younger generation. For instance, kids these days insist their parents for buying unnecessary clothes by coming under the influence of the fashion trends created by the companies. Therefore, parents have no other choice than spending their hard earned money for their kids even if they are not financially strong.

Another reason this that people start to worry about their dressing in public and they feel underconfident if their clothing is not up to the fashion standards created by these clothing brands. For example, if a person who is not financially sound and he has came under the effect of these global fashion trends, he can be under pressure for not being able to afford the clothing that follows a certain fashion trend. This results in unnecessary stress created by these brand oriented fashion trends.

In conclusion, I believe people going after global fashion trends is a negative development because it leads to wastage of money and it creates unwanted stress for the ones who cannot afford the clothes which statisfy the fashion trends created by the gready clothing brands.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring how global fashion influences lives and presenting a clear position that it is a negative development. The student supports their stance with relevant arguments regarding financial pressure and social stress, stating that multimillion dollar clothing brands make a sense of fear of missing out among the people. However, the ideas could be extended further with deeper examples rather than broad generalisations about kids and parents. It fits the Band 6 descriptor well because it addresses all parts of the task, though some arguments are slightly under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a clear overall progression with a recognizable introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on distinct reasons, and a concluding paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'One of the main reason', 'Another reason this that', and 'In conclusion'. However, some cohesive links are faulty or mechanically applied, and there are grammatical errors in the transitional phrases themselves. Referencing is generally clear, resulting in a solid coherent structure that matches Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'financial pressure', 'social media influencers', and 'underconfident'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are sometimes accompanied by word-choice or collocation errors, such as writing 'statisfy' instead of satisfy, 'gready' instead of greedy, and 'brand oriented' instead of brand-oriented. Spelling and morphological errors occur, but they do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'a person who is not financially sound and he has came under the effect of these global fashion trends'. There are several noticeable grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'One of the main reason why I think this a negative thing', tense errors ('has came'), and missing prepositions. These errors require some effort to parse occasionally, but they rarely impede overall communication, reflecting Band 6 performance.
