Student answer (Band 7.0)
Global fashion trends have become a significant influence on the way people dress, particularly among ypunger generations. This influence has grown rapidly due to social media, international businesses and the increasing exposure to celebrities and online content. Although global fashion offers greater choice and encourages cultural exchange, I believe its negative effects, particularly on consumer behaviour and cultural identity, can be considerable.
One major reason for the growing influence of global fashion is the expansion of social media. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube allow people to see clothing styles from different countries almost instantly. Influencers and celebrities frequently prompte particular brands or styles, which can then become popular among millions of followers. In addition, international fashion companies have made their products widely available through online shopping. As a result, someone living in India, for example, can easily follow the same fashion trends as someone in Europe or the United States. This constant exposure makes international styles more familiar and desirable.
There are certainly some positive aspects to this development. Global fashion gives consumers a much wider range of choices and allows people to experiment with different styles. It can also encourage cultural exchange, as traditional clothing and design ideas from one country can become popular elsewhere. For instance, garments inspired by Indian embroidery or Japanese design have appeared in international fashion collections, introducing these cultural elements to new audiences. Fashion can therefore provide a way for people to express themselves while also becoming more aware of styles from other cultures.
However, the increasing dominance of global trends also has disadvantage. One concern is that people may purchase clothes simply because they are fashionable rather than because they genuinely need them. Social media can create pressure to keep up with constantly changing trends, contributing to excessive consumption and textile waste. Another concern is that local clothing traditionals may gradually become less popular, particularly amonf younger people who are heavily exposed to international styles. If this continues over generations. some traditional forms of dress coule become less common in everyday life.
In conclusion, global fashion has become highly influential because social media, celebrities, international brands and online shopping have made worlldwide trends accessible to almost everyone. While this development provides greater freedom od choice and encourages cultural interaction, its contribution to excessive consumption and the decline of some local traditions makes it a development that should be approached with some caution

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student has fully addressed all parts of the prompt, answering both how global fashion has become a strong influence and whether this is a positive or negative development. A clear position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the expansion of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, as well as the integration of traditional Indian and Japanese designs into international collections. The arguments regarding consumer behavior, textile waste, and the potential decline of local clothing traditions are extended logically. The response meets all criteria for a strong performance under this heading.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the causes of global fashion's influence to positive aspects, negative impacts, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively and flexibly, as seen with transitional phrases like 'In addition,' 'As a result,' 'For instance,' and 'However.' Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, and referencing is clear and consistent. Overall, the flow of ideas is natural and easy to follow, supporting the reader's comprehension.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion on fashion and consumerism. Less common lexical items are used effectively, such as 'consumer behaviour,' 'cultural exchange,' 'excessive consumption,' and 'textile waste.' While there are a few minor typographical or spelling errors—such as 'ypunger' instead of 'younger,' 'prompte' instead of 'promotes,' 'disadvantage' instead of 'disadvantages,' 'traditionals' instead of 'traditions,' 'amonf' instead of 'among,' 'some' instead of 'somewhat,' 'coule' instead of 'could,' and 'od' instead of 'of'—these do not impede communication and are largely outweighed by the appropriate deployment of topic-specific vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer uses a good variety of complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses, participial phrases, and relative clauses, demonstrating control over syntax. There are frequent error-free sentences, such as 'Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube allow people to see clothing styles from different countries almost instantly.' Although minor typographical errors exist as noted under lexical resource, the grammatical accuracy remains high. Punctuation is generally sound, and the occasional mechanical slips do not interfere with the clear transmission of ideas.
