Student answer (Band 6.0)

Luxurious fashion brands influence people from their daily wear to outfits of Met Gala in this contemporary society. Many individuals may got attracted by fashion designers following recent trends. From my perspective, this view has unfavourable development because the recurrent changing fashion trends at globally need plenty of money, and collecting an abundance of clothes into wardrobes may affect the environment due to the frequent recycling process.

One compelling drawback of following fashion trends is that youngsters spend substantial amount of their income and time keeping up with the latest trends. In addition, human beings are social creatures with the innate need to accept and connect; therefore, this need has been significantly amplified in modern times by following the fashion influencers to generate images of the "perfect" life and rapidly evolving trends. For example, the fear of missing out (FOMO) in the society of Gen-Z surged compared to the past due to social media trend challenges. As a result, people are compelled to spend readily on the latest fashion to keep up with trends by following their role models.

Another adverse effect of how individuals eagerly influenced by worldwide fashion is that young people purchase new clothes every time they find the latest fashion clothes. In other words, the more they buy clothes, the more their cupboards get full of clothes, and these clothes should not be disposed easily in environment. For instance, since recycling is becoming costly nowadays, people still avoid the risk of environmental crisis and global economy crisis. Consequently, the government should provide majory of funds and donations to the recycling process, which needed the strict policy towards the recycling process of the fashion goods.

In conclusion, although the younger generation want to be up to date with the trends, they need to focus on the financial and environmental stability. I believe individuals should avoid the global fashion trends every time because it has negative development of wasting money on clothes and recycling process.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: how global fashion influences people's lives and whether this is a positive or negative development. The writer presents a clear position throughout, arguing that it is a negative development due to financial and environmental impacts. Ideas are generally relevant, but some points lack full development and tend to over-generalise. For instance, the discussion around recycling and the role of government in the third paragraph is somewhat convoluted and brief. However, the main arguments regarding financial strain and consumerism are adequately supported with examples such as Gen-Z social media trends. Overall, the task is addressed with a clear stance, placing this performance solidly at band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct negative consequence (financial strain and environmental impact). Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'In addition,' 'For example,' and 'In conclusion,' though some referencing is slightly mechanical. For instance, phrases like 'Another adverse effect of how individuals eagerly influenced by worldwide fashion' feel a bit clumsy in their connective structure. Nonetheless, there is a clear logical progression throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow the writer's arguments without significant difficulty, which fully satisfies the requirements for band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'contemporary society,' 'innate need,' 'fear of missing out (FOMO),' and 'environmental crisis.' However, there are notable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'many individuals may got attracted' (should be 'get attracted' or 'are attracted'), 'recurrent changing fashion trends at globally' (grammatically awkward), and 'spend readily' rather than 'readily spend.' Additionally, 'majory of funds' contains a spelling and word-form error. While these vocabulary limitations and occasional errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching the higher bands, aligning best with a band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are, however, several noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'Many individuals may got attracted,' 'trends at globally need,' and 'which needed the strict policy,' which demonstrate inconsistent control over verb forms and passive/active voice. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while the errors occasionally cause the reader to pause, they do not completely obscure the meaning. Because simple sentences are generally more accurate while complex attempts frequently contain errors, this performance fits the band 6.0 descriptors.
