Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern era, global fashion has fundamentally changed the way people dress. At present, individuals spend a significant amount of time choosing their outfits by researching online and following global trends. I strongly believe that this is a negative development regarding people's fashion choices.

Currently, many people follow numerous famous figures on social media and are significantly influenced by the activities of their favorite influencers. When fans see a favorite actor wearing new clothes, they become much more interested in purchasing them. In many cases, they are not buying necessary items, but rather a 'famous identity'. Furthermore, fashion companies advertise heavily through social media. Algorithms monitor user behavior; for instance, when a user watches a video about a specific product multiple times, they are immediately shown advertisements to encourage a purchase.

There are several reasons why I believe this is a negative development. This strong influence can negatively affect personal choice and autonomy. In the coming decades, it may distance individuals from their own traditional clothing and lead them to waste money on unnecessary products. Finally, following global fashion trends often forces people to prioritize trends over their own comfort.

In conclusion, although following global fashion trends can make people look more attractive in the short term, it can ultimately destroy their ability to choose clothes that are perfect for their own needs and cultural heritage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring how global fashion has become influential through social media and influencers, and taking a clear position that this is a negative development. Ideas are relevant, such as the discussion on algorithms and personal autonomy, but they are somewhat under-developed due to the lack of word count. Furthermore, the length check indicates that the essay contains 227 words, falling short of the mandatory 250-word minimum requirement. This under-length limitation restricts the depth of the arguments and prevents the response from reaching a higher band score. Consequently, Task Achievement is penalised for length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. Ideas are structured reasonably well across distinct paragraphs, starting with an introduction, moving to causes and negative effects, and concluding with a summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Furthermore', 'There are several reasons why', and 'In conclusion'. However, some referencing and cohesive links are slightly mechanical. Overall, the organizational structure is clear and allows the reader to follow the writer's arguments without confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task. The student successfully incorporates some less common and topic-specific vocabulary such as 'fundamental', 'autonomy', 'algorithms', and 'cultural heritage'. There are occasional attempts at precise phrasing, for example, 'distanced individuals from their own traditional clothing'. Word choice is generally appropriate and communication is never impeded by lexical errors. While the range is somewhat limited by the overall brevity of the essay, the vocabulary deployed demonstrates sufficient flexibility to meet the descriptors for Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures effectively (e.g., 'When fans see a favorite actor wearing new clothes, they become much more interested...'). The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is handled well throughout. There are very few errors, and those that do occur do not impede communication at all. The control over grammar is commendable for this level, reflecting a solid command of sentence structures.
