Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, people’s clothing choices are increasingly influenced by global fashion trends. This influence has become particularly strong because of social media, international brands and the rapid spread of information. Although global fashion has some disadvantages, I believe it is largely a positive development because it provides people with greater choice and opportunities for self-expression.

There are several reasons why global fashion has become so influential. First, the growth of social media platforms has made fashion trends accessible to people almost everywhere. Celebrities, influencers and fashion designers regularly share photographs and videos of their clothes, which can quickly become popular among millions of followers. As a result, people can discover new styles without needing to travel to major fashion centres. Second, international clothing companies have expanded into many countries, making similar products available across the world. Online shopping has strengthened this trend because consumers can purchase clothes from international brands with just a few clicks.

In my view, this development is generally positive. One major advantage is that people have a much wider range of clothing styles to choose from. They can experiment with different colours, designs and combinations and use fashion as a way of expressing their personality. For example, young people in India can now easily find clothing styles that were previously associated mainly with Western countries. Global fashion can also encourage creativity and cultural exchange, as designers increasingly combine traditional clothing with modern styles.

However, there are some negative consequences. Excessive interest in trends can encourage people to buy clothes unnecessarily, contributing to waste and environmental problems. In addition, some individuals may feel pressured to follow fashionable styles simply to fit in with their peers.

In conclusion, global fashion has become a powerful influence mainly because of social media, international brands and online shopping. Despite some negative effects, I believe its ability to provide greater choice, creativity and cultural exchange makes it a largely positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by explaining why global fashion has become influential and presenting a clear position that it is a positive development. In the introduction, the writer outlines the main drivers and establishes a stance. The first body paragraph explores the causes, citing the role of social media platforms, influencers, and international clothing companies combined with online shopping. The subsequent paragraphs weigh both sides of the argument, acknowledging the negative environmental consequences and peer pressure, but successfully supporting the viewpoint that the benefits of wider choice, creativity, and cultural exchange outweigh the drawbacks. Ideas are well developed and extended logically, fulfilling the requirements for Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introductory overview, moving into causes, exploring advantages, addressing counter-arguments, and culminating in a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Second', 'In my view', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argumentation. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. While the cohesive mechanisms are clear, they are somewhat standard rather than entirely flexible or sophisticated, which places this text firmly at the Band 7.0 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary that allows for some flexibility and precision, such as 'accessible', 'international clothing companies', 'cultural exchange', and 'environmental problems'. There is an awareness of collocation and style, evident in phrases like 'greater choice and opportunities for self-expression' and 'excessive interest in trends'. Minor lexical infelicities do not impede communication. Although the vocabulary is appropriate and clearly communicates the writer's ideas, it lacks the more sophisticated and uncommon lexical items characteristic of higher bands, making a solid Band 7.0 appropriate here.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a good control of grammar and punctuation, utilising a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with frequent error-free sentences. Examples of complex structures include 'Celebrities, influencers and fashion designers regularly share photographs and videos of their clothes, which can quickly become popular...' and 'Global fashion can also encourage creativity and cultural exchange, as designers increasingly combine traditional clothing with modern styles.' Grammatical accuracy is high with only occasional minor slips, and punctuation is managed correctly throughout the response. The control displayed across a variety of structures comfortably meets the criteria for Band 7.0.
