Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, global fashion trends have had a significant impact on the way people dress around the world. This influence is driven by wide range of factors such as social media, international brands, and greater cultural exchange. In my opinion, this is a largely positive development because it increases fashion awareness and allows people to express themselves more freely.

International style of fashion has gained immense popularity, as a significant propotion of the population, dress according to the current trends and what they find suits their personalities, body types and prefrences. In the contemporary times, the fashion style of individuals have changed considerably due to prevalent use of social media, which enables the youth to know about the recent fashion styles through influencers. For instance, a dress worn by an actress in a movie becomes a global trend which is subsequently followed by everyone. Furthermore, new brands being promoted by making them look premium and luxury lures consumers to buy from them to make them look affluent and modern.

On the one hand, global fashion trends, has enabled individuals to explore new styles and understand what suits them. For example, jeans has provided unprecedented convenience, while riding a bike wich was not possible previously with a saree. Moreover, trying international fashion trends has led to exchange of new ideas and concepts which also facilitated better buisnesses between countries.

On the other hand, due to increased influence of outside trends on youth, the cultural herritage is being forgotten as it has been made to look outdated and boring. For instance, dhoti and kurta is completely regarded as informal. The requirement of keeping up with these global trends is also affecting financial stability of people, as they spend a significant amount of their salaries to buy new clothes.

In conclusion, although individuals today are greatly influenced by foreign dressing style, in my opinion it is a positive development as people can have wide range of options to choose how to dress, and express themselves accordngly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both the causes of global fashion's influence (such as social media, international brands, and cultural exchange) and whether this is a positive or negative development. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay, concluding that it is largely a positive development due to the freedom of expression and variety it offers. Ideas are generally well-supported with examples, such as mentioning actresses in movies and practical benefits like jeans over traditional wear. However, the development in body paragraphs sometimes borders on over-generalisation or slight repetition, particularly when discussing cultural heritage and financial implications. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled with relevant, well-articulated ideas that meet all the prompt requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are arranged coherently, with distinct introduction and conclusion paragraphs, alongside balanced body paragraphs addressing positive and negative aspects. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, including transitional phrases like 'For instance', 'Furthermore', 'On the one hand', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical, such as minor errors in punctuation and article use around cohesive ties. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, but paragraph 3 ('On the one hand') is quite brief and could have been integrated or expanded more smoothly to enhance the overall flow and structural cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'immense popularity', 'contemporary times', 'unprecedented convenience', and 'financial stability'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'propotion' instead of proportion, 'prefrences' instead of preferences, 'buisnesses' instead of businesses, and 'herritage' instead of heritage. Collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'try international fashion trends has led to exchange'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey the intended meaning without severely impeding communication, fitting comfortably into the Band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over relative clauses and conditional-like structures (e.g., 'which enables the youth to know about the recent fashion styles'). However, there are frequent minor grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the essay, including missing articles ('a wide range', 'the youth'), incorrect comma splices and missing spaces after punctuation marks (e.g., 'prefrences. In the contemporary times'), and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'global fashion trends, has enabled'). While complex structures are attempted, they are frequently flawed by minor punctuation or agreement slips. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the response securely at Band 6.
