Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent times, global fashion trends have significantly shaped the way people dress around the world. This influence is mainly driven by the rapid rise of social media and multinational retail brands. In my opinion, while this phenomenon promotes global connectivity, it is largely a negative development due to the loss of cultural identity and environmental damage.

o begin with, the widespread reach of global fashion is primarily driven by digital media and mass market advertising. Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow fashion influencers and international brands to showcase western and contemporary clothing styles to a worldwide audience instantaneously. Furthermore, fast-fashion giants such as Zara and H&M have made trendy apparel highly affordable and accessible in almost every major city. As a result, individuals, especially the younger generation, are constantly exposed to and persuaded by these international clothing choices.

espite its popularity, I consider this trend to be mostly negative for two major reasons. Firstly, it leads to the erosion of traditional attire and local cultural identity. As people increasingly adopt westernized clothing, traditional garments that reflect a nation’s history and craftsmanship are gradually abandoned. Secondly, the fast-fashion industry thrives on excessive consumption and overproduction, which generates massive environmental pollution and textile waste. The continuous demand for cheap, trend-based clothing causes severe resource depletion and damage to ecosystems globally.

In conclusion, global fashion has gained immense dominance due to digital media connectivity and cheap fast-fashion manufacturing. Although it encourages a modern, unified aesthetic, I believe it is a negative trend overall because it threatens cultural heritage and inflicts significant harm on the environment.

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. It investigates how global fashion has become influential through social media and fast fashion, and clearly establishes a position that the development is largely negative due to cultural erosion and environmental harm. Ideas are well developed and supported with relevant explanations, such as the role of brands like Zara and H&M and the impact of textile waste. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, meeting all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It is divided into appropriate paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used effectively to link ideas, such as 'Furthermore', 'As a result', and 'Secondly'. Although there are minor typos at the start of paragraphs due to missing initial letters, the overall structure and flow remain clear and coherent. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'widespread reach', 'instantaneously', 'erosion of traditional attire', and 'excessive consumption' indicate a strong control of less common lexical items and an awareness of appropriate academic style. Word choice and collocation are generally accurate, and although minor typographical errors exist, they do not impede communication in any way.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer uses a variety of complex structures with frequent error-free sentences. Examples such as 'As people increasingly adopt westernized clothing, traditional garments that reflect a nation’s history and craftsmanship are gradually abandoned' demonstrate good control of subordinate clauses. Grammar and punctuation are handled well, with only a few minor slips that do not interfere with understanding. The majority of the sentences are well-formed and grammatically accurate.
