Student answer (Band 5.5)

With the advent of modern technology and social platforms anyone can learn about global fashion trends. Therefore people are influenced to these modern trends by mass media, fast fashion supply chains and seem to follow them. While proponents find it a positive advancement, i find it a negative one as it damages cultural identity and inspires spending more to look fashionable.

People especially teenagers are greatly influenced by these modern trends which they see in social media platforms constantly. In addition, fast fashion companies make this trendy dresses available to all consumers in considerably cheap price range. Moreover, influencers, celebs and well known figures in social media show their wardrobes and make people inspire to buy their dresses. Fast fashion companies make replica ti these dresses which provide the buying opportunities for low income background people as well.

One significant reason behind my saying it a negative development is it affects cultural identity greatly. Every nation has a traditional dress code what makes a nation exceptional from others. For instance, Japani females wear 'Kimono' in their special events or festival. Bangali females wear 'Saree'. These dresses are the identification of their own culture tradition. Nevertheless, global fashion trends have changed the way people dressed up in the past and motivated to follow these trends. Youngsters, nowadays feel ashamed if they do not follow any trendy fashion. Moreover these fashion inspires overspending unnecessarily. Because new fashion comes every other day and older one loses its popularity. Hence, when consumers buy something after seeing a fashion it becomes old the other day as new fashion introduce each day on the social media platforms. In addition, kids put pressure on their parents to buy these trendy items and even commit suicide or even do crimes if they do not get that items. In Bangladesh its a daily incidents to murder guardians if they fail to buy them iPhone, bike or other expensive items.

In conclusion, even if it has some positive sides like knowing others culture and maintain harmony, get along with the world, i strongly believe its negative sides outweigh positive ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining how global fashion has become influential through media and fast fashion, and presents a clear personal position that this is a negative development. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as 'Japani females wear Kimono' and 'Bangali females wear Saree' to highlight cultural impacts. However, the reasoning tends to over-generalise or become extreme in places, such as claiming that youngsters commit murder if they fail to get expensive items. This slightly undermines the academic tone and development depth. Overall, the prompt is adequately covered, placing the task response firmly at a Band 6.5 to 7.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay is arranged into logical paragraphs with an introductory paragraph, two body paragraphs exploring causes and negative effects, and a brief conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty and mechanical, with abrupt transitions such as 'One significant reason behind my saying it a negative development is...'. Referencing and logical progression are occasionally strained by missing punctuation and run-on phrasing, such as 'Moreover these fashion inspires overspending unnecessarily.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate ideas, but internal cohesion lacks flexibility. This performance aligns closely with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'fast fashion supply chains', 'cultural identity', and 'overspending unnecessarily'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that detract from precision, such as 'replica ti these dresses' (replica of), 'considerably cheap price range' (considerably low), and 'Japani' (Japanese). Furthermore, missing punctuation and lower-case pronouns like 'i' indicate limitations in lexical control. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the vocabulary squarely in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising subordinate clauses such as 'While proponents find it a positive advancement, i find it a negative one...' and 'when consumers buy something after seeing a fashion...'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent missing articles ('in social media platforms', 'at considerably cheap price'), punctuation errors, capitalization issues ('i'), and subject-verb agreement flaws ('these fashion inspires'). Complex sentences are often somewhat faulty in construction. These recurring errors mean the essay fits best into the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, warranting a Band 6.0.
