Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern era, many people are influenced by changing trends in the global fashion industry. In my opinion, it leads to a negative development because this indicates people are addicted to social media and it may lead to low self-esteem.

People who have a high screen time for social media apps are aware of the global fashion trends. Instead of doing something productive, they tend to spend most of the time on social media and follow different influencers. For instance, teenagers watch influencers and want the same clothes as them. Hence, they pressurize their struggling parents to buy them the same products. This shows, using social media and being influenced by the trends can affect people's lives and cause financial burdens as well.

Secondly, people start comparing themselves to others which leads to low self-esteem. Mostly young generation wants everything they see online and for some reason when they don't get it, they become upset. For example, influencers post about New York Fashion Week and some people would want to have dresses from the same designers who featured their work in the fashion week. If they are not able to have the same dresses, they would blame the circumstances and they would feel that they have less worth.

In conclusion, people are influnced by trends and global fashion has become a strong influence on people's lives because of social media. This has some negative effects on the people because they tend to have low self-esteem if they are not able to cope up with the trends.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: how global fashion became so influential and whether this is a positive or negative development. The writer takes a clear position in the introduction, arguing that it is a negative development driven by social media addiction and low self-esteem. Ideas are extended with examples, such as teenagers wanting designer clothes seen online and putting financial pressure on parents. However, some arguments remain somewhat generalized and could benefit from further depth or broader perspective to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is properly addressed and ideas are relevant throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a clear overall progression. It is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on different aspects of the negative impacts, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'For instance', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are at times a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as starting multiple sentences with 'people'. Paragraphing is sufficient and appropriate for the length of the essay, providing a clear structure that guides the reader easily through the writer's arguments.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'global fashion industry', 'screen time', 'influencers', and 'financial burdens'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though occasional word choice and spelling inaccuracies occur, such as the misspelling 'influnced' in the conclusion. Collocations are generally appropriate, and while the vocabulary is not particularly wide or sophisticated, it clearly conveys the intended meaning without impeding communication. With more precise phrasing and varied lexical choices, the score could be pushed higher.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses effectively. Grammatical control is generally good, and while there are minor errors—such as missing articles or slightly awkward phrasing like 'Mostly young generation' instead of 'Most of the younger generation'—these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly for the most part. The writer demonstrates enough control over complex structures to satisfy the requirements of a Band 6.5 or 7.0 range.
