Student answer (Band 6.0)

Fashion has become a very important part of our lives. There is not a single piece in our daily usage that is not inspired by a fashion trend, from the way we dress to the way we eat, all of it is influenced by it. However, for some people fashion is not a part of their lives rather fashion for them, is life. From my perspective, fashion is a good influence, rather it is a more creative outlet for expressing onself.

To build on my argument, fashion is not just a piece of clothing, it is creativity that lets people express their personsality, their likes and dislikes. Moreover, fashion is not restricted to what we wear, it's field is far more broader then that. For instance, In 2019 a new trend was making rounds on the internet and everybody was copying it. The trend was about minimalism, where homes and building were decorated in the most minimilist way to reduce unnecessary clutter. The trend became so popular that now it has its own fashion category.

In retrospect, there are some downsides to fashion as well. People use the influence of fashion for their own gain, whether its financial or societal. Moreover, social media influencer use recent trends to increase their followers while luxury companies launch new products to match the recent fashion styles. For example, In 2022 a fashion trend started which took the internet by storm. The fashion trend was the revival of low-rise jeans from the 90s. Everyone was immediately facinated by the trend, influencers started making short vedios wearing the jeans, while manufacturing brands started producing them to monetize the trend. But the problem lies with the its relevancy. These trends start and take-off in no-time but the declines are just as fast, they may start in the january of one year and become irrelevant and outdated in the june of the same year.

To conclude the argument, Fashion is both a good and a bad thing. while it can create iconic and record historical moments, at the same time it can be used by people for their own gains. But the pros outweighs the cons. Fashion is a staple, it not only defines a person but it can turn a person into an undying fashion icon preserving their legacy forever. Thus, fashion will forever be the modern creative development of the human race.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, examining both how global fashion has become influential and whether this is a positive or negative development. The writer takes a clear position that fashion is a positive development, stating that it serves as a creative outlet for self-expression. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the 2019 minimalism trend and the 2022 revival of low-rise jeans, which illustrate both the spread of global trends and their transient nature. However, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise regarding how trends start and disappear, and the exploration of *how* it became influential relies slightly more on examples than on underlying sociological mechanisms. Nevertheless, the requirements of the task are well met overall, earning a solid Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently structured across four distinct paragraphs, starting with an introduction and position, moving through supporting arguments and counter-arguments, and ending with a clear conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, including transitional phrases like 'To build on my argument,' 'Moreover,' and 'In retrospect.' However, there are minor cohesion and referencing flaws, such as the abrupt shift in tone at the start of the conclusion and occasional mechanical usage of cohesive markers. Overall, the flow is logical and easy to follow, justifying a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items with varying success. Phrases like 'creative outlet,' 'undying fashion icon,' and 'monetize the trend' show a good awareness of modern lexical fields. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'onenelf' (self), 'personsality' (personality), 'brader' (broader), 'minimilist' (minimalist), 'facinated' (fascinated), 'vedios' (videos), and 'relevancy' instead of relevance. Furthermore, minor slip-ups like 'its field is far more broader than that' (double comparative) highlight occasional inaccuracies. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient for Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over punctuation and syntax. Sentences such as 'The trend was about minimalism, where homes and building were decorated in the most minimilist way to reduce unnecessary clutter' show an ability to construct complex clauses. However, there is a recurring presence of grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as comma splices ('Fashion is a staple, it not only defines a person...'), subject-verb agreement issues ('social media influencer use'), and incorrect prepositions ('with the its relevancy'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching Band 7.0, aligning best with a Band 6.0.
