Student answer (Band 7.0)

Facets of how people dress nowadays are influenced by the global trends of fashion. Global fashion has become a strong influence on people's lives due to marketing and social media and I believe this to be a negative development.

Currently it is fair to say that global fashion has a strong hold on people's lives. Consumerism has been a key point on influencing the cycle of new trends that constantly emerge in order to appeal to the needs of people for outer beauty and attention. Social media also has a massive role in this, as it has been engineered to have people focused only on the amount of views and likes that they receive. As a result, this has turned more into a social numbers game rather than a common interest on fashion. Due to both reasons, people have been conditioned to only adapt the most recent fashion trends because this is what is considered as savvy. You could argue that uniqueness of preference has been hijacked, which can be a strong influence on people's lives regarding their decision making. This breeds comformity and a lack of creative spark in people's daily life.

I think this is a negative development to say the least, because the focus has been shifted away from the art and manufacturing process and into superficiality and what can be considered the most avant guarde. Global fashion trends that emerge are pushed by large companies with the goal in mind to increase their sales. I think this is bad as it takes away from organic trends that emerge. Fashion should be about expressing personality and not being a blank canvas replicated by everyone and everywhere. If large conglomerates dictate what is fashionable or not, this takes away from the human creativity that creates the fashion to begin with. Trends arise because people really like what is presented to them and this is an opportunity to showcase the talented people that had a role in the creative process.

Global fashion has become a strong influence on people's lives due to how it is made popular in the first place. The effect it has on the psyche and the art itself, I strongly consider as a negative development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: how global fashion has become a strong influence through marketing and social media, and whether this is a positive or negative development, taking a clear negative stance. The ideas are well extended and supported, such as discussing consumerism and the pressure of social media engagement. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in places, and some arguments regarding corporate influence and organic trends are slightly repetitive between the second and third paragraphs. Nevertheless, the position is well maintained throughout, meeting the requirements of a Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs addressing the causes and the negative evaluation, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'As a result', 'Due to both reasons', and 'If large conglomerates dictate'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, although the transition between paragraphs could sometimes be smoother to achieve a higher band. Referencing is generally clear, with minor mechanical usage of cohesive ties, placing this comfortably in the Band 7.0 category.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, employing terms such as 'consumerism', 'conglomerates', 'superficiality', and 'avant guarde' (spelled 'avant guarde' instead of 'avant-garde'). There are some attempts at less common lexical items with awareness of style, though there are minor spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'adapt' instead of 'adopt' in 'adapt the most recent fashion trends', and a typo in 'comformity' instead of 'conformity'. These errors do not impede communication, supporting a Band 6.5 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, incorporating conditional structures ('If large conglomerates dictate what is fashionable or not, this takes away...') and relative clauses. There is a good variety of sentence structures with frequent error-free sentences. However, some minor grammatical and punctuation errors persist, such as missing commas after introductory phrases (e.g., 'Currently it is fair to say') and the aforementioned lexical-grammatical confusion ('adapt' for 'adopt'). Control of grammar is generally good, justifying a Band 7.0 score.
