Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing why global fashion is influential and whether this is a positive or negative development. The writer presents a clear position, arguing that social media drives this trend and that it has a largely negative impact, particularly regarding financial pressure. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on the negative impacts focuses heavily on affordability issues without fully exploring other dimensions of the topic, such as cultural loss or environmental impacts. The examples provided, such as K-pop and social media platforms, are relevant but lack deep extension. As a result, the task is addressed adequately, but the development of ideas remains somewhat superficial, aligning with a Band 5.5 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps establish a basic structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by abrupt shifts in topic and repetitive phrasing. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, as seen in transitions like 'Furthermore, there are many disadvantages of this internation fashion trends.' Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as pronoun usage in 'They have not enough money to spend in these useless items.' Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks smooth flow, leading to a mechanical feel. These organizational shortcomings place this criterion firmly at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on high-frequency terms like 'people,' 'fashion,' and 'social media.' There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'internation' instead of 'international,' 'lives there life' instead of 'live their life,' and 'desire products' instead of 'desired products.' While the writer attempts less common lexical items like 'K-pop culture' and 'emotional and mentally disturbed,' inaccuracies in collocation and form impede precision. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, but frequent errors place it at a Band 5.0 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty. There are widespread grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'traditional, cultural trends plays') and tense inconsistencies. Punctuation and article usage are also weak throughout the response (e.g., 'individuals that belongs to a lower middle class families'). These frequent errors can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, though the general meaning remains recoverable. The control of grammar is limited, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 5.0 performance.
