Student answer (Band 6.0)

Here is a band score 5 sample essay written in a natural tone, reflecting the grammar, vocabulary, structure, and length typical of an IELTS Band 5 performance.

In present days, many people choose their clothing according to global fashion trends. There are some reasons why global fashion is becoming popular in our life, and I think this is mostly a negative development for society.

Global fashion has become very strong influence because of social media and internet. Applications like Instagram and TikTok show famous celebrities and influencers wearing new types of modern clothes. Young people see these videos every day and they want to look like them. Another reason is that big fast fashion companies make cheap clothes and ship them to all around the world. Because the price is low, ordinary people can easily buy new trendy clothes every month.

In my opinion, this trend is a negative development for two main reasons. First of all, it causes big harm to local cultures and traditional dressing. In many countries, people are stopping to wear their traditional dresses because they think modern western clothes look more stylish. For example, in my country, young boys rarely wear traditional outfits except on big festival days. Secondly, global fashion creates a lot of waste for the environment. Fast fashion clothes are made with cheap material, so people throw them away after wearing a few times, which creates huge garbage.

To conclude, social media and cheap prices have made global fashion a powerful part of our daily life. However, I believe this is a negative trend because it destroys traditional culture and hurts the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, meeting the criteria for the lower band while showing glimpses of higher-level development. The writer successfully outlines why global fashion has become influential, citing social media and fast fashion, and clearly states a negative position. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the impact on local cultures and environmental waste are introduced with valid points, but the examples provided, such as 'young boys rarely wear traditional outfits except on big festival days,' could be extended further to fully unlock higher band qualities. The overall progression of ideas is relevant to the prompt, ensuring the core requirements of the task are satisfied adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical structure divided into appropriate paragraphs. The introduction sets the stage, body paragraphs handle causes and opinions respectively, and a conclusion wraps up the ideas. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'First of all,' 'Secondly,' and 'To conclude.' However, some referencing and transitions can feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, preventing the flow from reaching a more natural and sophisticated level. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, ensuring that each main idea has its own dedicated space, contributing to an easy-to-follow reading experience throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for tackling the prompt, successfully incorporating terms like 'global fashion trends,' 'influencers,' and 'fast fashion companies.' Attempts at less common vocabulary are visible, but they sometimes display noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'cause big harm' instead of 'cause great harm' or 'wearing a few times' instead of 'wearing them a few times.' While spelling is generally accurate and communication is not impeded, the limited and minimally adequate range of vocabulary holds the writing back from exhibiting the flexibility and precision needed for higher tiers.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'Because the price is low, ordinary people can easily buy...' However, attempts at complex structures are occasionally marred by grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('in present days' instead of 'at present' or 'in the present day' and 'with cheap material' instead of 'with cheap materials') and minor errors with verb patterns like 'stopping to wear' instead of 'stopping wearing.' These errors represent a typical mix where grammar and punctuation mistakes are present, yet they rarely impede communication, reflecting solid control over basic structures alongside developing control over more complex ones.
