Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt only partially, which is characteristic of this level. While both parts of the task—the causes of global fashion influence and whether this is a positive or negative development—are touched upon, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and the impact of designers on styles are introduced but not sufficiently extended or supported with deeper analysis. Furthermore, the writer's position is somewhat unclear and shifts towards the end, jumping abruptly between observations without a cohesive line of argumentation. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully explore each part of the prompt by developing distinct, well-reasoned arguments supported by specific examples rather than relying on brief, disconnected assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation evident in the division into paragraphs, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. The logical flow is frequently disrupted by abrupt transitions and sentences that appear disjointed, such as the sudden shift from discussing Marilyn Monroe to global fashion designers, and the fragmented opening paragraph which trails off with 'which is'. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inaccurately, making the connections between ideas mechanical or unclear. Pronoun referencing is also occasionally confusing, leaving the reader to guess connections. To improve in this criterion, the writer must ensure that each paragraph has a clear central theme, that ideas follow one another in a logical sequence, and that a wider range of cohesive devices is employed smoothly to guide the reader through the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for discussing the topic of fashion trends. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'voloptious' and 'over-sized', there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation, including 'beleffecthoobe', 'importent', 'popularecht', 'negarive', 'maintainig', 'deat', and 'surpisingly'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to correct spelling and word formation, and use less common lexical items more accurately and with better awareness of style and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty or incomplete, as seen in the truncated opening sentence and awkward phrasing such as 'Fashions by many are believed to dictate people how to look'. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and awkward verb forms like 'boasting their brand new outfit making many men and women jealous'. These errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. To move up to the next band, the writer needs to increase the variety of complex structures used and demonstrate better control over basic grammatical rules, punctuation, and sentence boundaries to ensure that the majority of sentences are clear and error-free.
