Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address both parts of the prompt regarding global fashion influences and whether it is a positive or negative development, stating an opinion that the merits surpass the negatives. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion around financial constraints and national products such as Indian 'swadesh' and local communities lacks clear elaboration and logical extension. The development tends to wander into repetitive assertions rather than thoroughly exploring the impacts of global trends on modern life. To move to a higher level, the writer would need to fully develop their main ideas with more cohesive, relevant supporting details and clear, sustained argumentation throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is an attempt to organise the essay into paragraphs with some structural signposting such as 'The above statement leads to several consequences' and 'On the other hand'. However, the overall progression is difficult to follow because of mechanical and inaccurate use of cohesive devices, and a lack of clear logical sequencing between sentences. Referencing is frequently unclear, and the mechanical transitions do not successfully link the ideas together. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should focus on using logical relationships between sentences, ensuring that referencing pronouns clearly point to their antecedents, and building a smoother, more natural progression of ideas from one paragraph to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, demonstrating a limited range that barely meets the task requirements. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the response, such as 'influanic', 'affprd', 'mainely', 'reguard', and 'soundings', which frequently strain the reader's comprehension. While the student attempts to use some less common items like 'consequences' and 'manufacturings', inaccurate word choices impede precision. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to word formation and spelling, and select more precise, context-appropriate terminology to express their thoughts clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on faulty attempts at complex structures that contain frequent errors. Sentences often suffer from severe structural issues, such as missing subjects, incorrect verb tenses, poor subject-verb agreement, and run-on structures without proper punctuation control, seen in phrases like 'their are many developments are now changes'. Punctuation is also inconsistently applied. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader in grasping the intended meaning. To progress, the writer must build a stronger foundation in basic sentence construction, ensure correct verb forms and subject-verb agreement, and exercise greater control over simple and complex sentence patterns.
