Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some ideas regarding why global fashion influences people and why it is a negative development, though the discussion remains limited and repetitive. The position is discernible but lacks clear, sustained development throughout the essay. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls short of the minimum word count of 250 words, containing only 226 words. To reach a higher band, the writer must fully develop all parts of the prompt with extended explanations and relevant examples, ensuring the output meets the required length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation evident in the essay, with a basic introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression from one idea to the next. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, as seen with the constant reliance on basic transitions like 'To begin with' and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is faulty due to repetitive phrasing and weak referencing. To improve, the writer needs to establish a clearer logical flow between sentences and utilise a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices without overusing simple connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used represents a limited but minimally adequate range for the task. The writer relies heavily on basic and repetitive words, such as 'individuals', 'fashionable', and 'clothes', and makes noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, including phrases like 'mange their families expenses' and 'adopt global fashion trends'. While communication is generally maintained despite these errors, the lack of varied or less-common lexical items restricts the score. To progress, the student should expand their vocabulary range and practice using precise word forms and appropriate collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as missing subject-verb agreement or incorrect prepositions, including 'is impact on their income' and 'individuals starts to wear'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and distraction for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic sentence patterns, improve verb-tense consistency, and incorporate a wider variety of accurate grammatical structures.
